Walmart Hints It Will Match Amazon 1-Day Delivery

Walmart isn’t taking the news of Amazon 1-day Free Prime Shipping lying down. It hinted in a Tweet that it would do the same – but without requiring a membership fee.

“One-day free shipping…without a membership fee. Now THAT would be groundbreaking. Stay tuned,” Walmart tweeted on Friday.

Amazon had revealed in its first-quarter financial earnings call on Thursday that it was evolving its Free 2-Day Prime Shipping perk for Prime members to 1-day. Currently it costs $119/year for Amazon Prime membership, which includes other perks in addition to fast free shipping.

Walmart offers Free 2-Day Shipping on qualifying orders of $35 or more with no membership fee.

It’s interesting to note that ecommerce marketplaces are starting to spar more with their rivals, including some defensive tweets, such as the following recent incidents:

  • eBay CEO Devin Wenig posted a tweet in response to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’s letter to shareholders.
  • Amazon posted a tweet in response to Senator and Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren (and it threw Walmart under the bus in the process!).

Shoppers aren’t likely to care too much about the bickering, but do care if they benefit from competition in the form of lower prices or enhanced features, such as fast and free shipping.

While the ecommerce giants duke it out, other retailers and marketplaces will have to figure out how to compete under much tougher conditions.

  1. We don’t have to worry about ebay using one day delivery as the post office is still taking over 4 days to deliver a birthday gift to the neighbor little girl. Even thought it was sent priority mail.

  2. Oh great, Now Wenig is going to figure out a way to force Sellers to offer One Day Delivery for free, but knowing Wenig, Ebay will somehow wind up charging the buyer for it but keeping all of that money for themselves. I think that is called Ebay Plus in Australia if I remember correctly.

That idea will go over like a lead balloon in the US as Sellers hopefully will not allow Ebay to put something like that in place in the US and to allow Ebay to collect all the money but expect the Seller to pay for it. That is how Wenigs mind thinks though, so look out Sellers as Wenig may have another way to reach even deeper into your pockets if you let him.
