eBay search broke late last week and has been overwhelming shoppers with listings unrelated to the search terms. The earliest thread we saw about the problem was this onefrom Thursday night called, “eBay Search Engine is Freaking Out!”:
“The search engine was working just fine until today. Before it would display listings with search words in the TITLE ONLY. Now it’s displaying thousands of unwanted listings with search words in the title OR description text, no matter how insignificant. Anyone else having this problem???”
The problem is intermittent, and as the poster above wrote, appears to be caused by eBay bringing back results where the search term appears in either the title or the description instead of the title alone. But it’s not just impacting search results – it’s impacting saved-search emails that eBay sends out to users.
The problem lasted through the weekend, with no public announcement from eBay that we could find. In fact, there were plenty of reports on Twitter about the problem – but when one user tweeted eBay on Sunday afternoon, “Is it just me or has @eBay’s saved search engine gone insane,” eBay responded, “Can you let us know what’s happening? We haven’t heard of any issues.”
