Amazon recalled AmazonBasics-branded ceramic space heaters today due to fire and burn hazards. The company notified customers who had purchased the heaters through email.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Amazon conducted the recall voluntarily under CPSC’s Fast Track Recall process. Fast Track recalls are initiated by firms that commit to work with the Federal agency to quickly announce the recall and remedy to protect consumers.
According to the CPSC, Amazon received 25 reports in the United States and 5 reports in Canada of the ceramic heater overheating, burning, or sparking. Two of those reports included minor damage to power outlets. There were no injuries associated with the incidents. No incidents were reported in Mexico.
A reader forwarded the email notice he received from Amazon, which informed him of the recall and requested he stop using the product. It also provided the following instructions on how to receive a refund:
“Unplug and discontinue use of the heater, cut the power cord, and dispose of the product. To receive your refund, please REPLY to this email with the completed Customer Acknowledgement section at the bottom of this email.
“We will refund your original payment method or apply an Amazon.com Gift Card to your account if the original payment method is no longer available. The refund amount will include all taxes and shipping charges paid. Your refund will be issued within 10 business days of Amazon receiving your fully completed Customer Acknowledgement.
“If you need further assistance, contact Amazon Customer Service at www.amazon.com/contactus.”
According to the CPSC, Amazon imported the product manufactured by Ningbo Singfun Electric Appliance Co., Ltd., of China and sold it online at Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, Amazon.com.mx from October 2017 through March 2019 for between $25 and $35.
