Marshalls Launches Online Store

Discount retailer Marshalls launched an ecommerce website on Tuesday, which sounds more like a headline from the early 2000s than 2019. Should online sellers be worried about the competition? Will Marshalls open is store to third-party sellers? Time will tell.

CNN quoted GlobalData Retail’s Neil Saunders calling it a smart move offering potential growth but noting that the retailer must be careful lest its online store cannibalize in-store sales.

Among the other retail chains operated by Marshalls’ parent company TJX are TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Sierra. According to the TJX website, it acquired Marshalls in 1995 and calls the resulting company “the largest off-price retailer of apparel and home fashions in the US.”

An interesting factoid from its Facebook page: Marshalls was initially established as an Army & Navy store in 1956. A post announcing the new online store had already garnered nearly 2,000 comments on Facebook as of Tuesday evening.

Shoppers will also discover interactive features that provide fresh ways to shop Marshalls, including:

  • “Swipe to Shop”: A gamified mobile shopping feature which allows shoppers to quickly view and sort product by swiping “left or right” to favorite items and buy or save for later.
  • Curated Shops: Online shops featuring the latest trends and must-haves, making it easy to discover crave-worthy merchandise. The site will launch with the Fall Style Shop, The Designer Shop and Made in Italy. Like the merchandise assortment, curated shops will also refresh frequently.
  • Influencer + Shopper Finds: Inspiration from influencer and consumer finds that will link shoppers to categories and similar products.

  1. What makes Marshalls or T.J.Maxx unique is their marketing of unique special purchase items where the buyer handles the item in person. I have been a long time customer of Marshalls and that is how they operate those brands along with Home Goods. Their outdoor goods division, Sierra, has had an on-line presence for many years as they stock fixed items from certain brands and offer them on-line at good prices.

    I guess they needed to do this in order to grow. I hope it works, but I’d rather stop in to buy.
