Amazon Expands in Canada with New FC and Tech Hub

Amazon will open a new fulfillment center in Alberta and a new office in Toronto, the company announced today. That makes 6,000 new jobs planned in Canada from announcements made by Amazon this year, from cloud computing and engineering roles to customer fulfillment positions, spanning new corporate offices in Vancouver and Toronto and four new customer fulfillment centers in Ottawa, Caledon, Tsawwassen First Nation, and Edmonton.

Amazon currently has over 10,000 employees across Canada and over 610,000 employees worldwide.

The new 1 million square-foot fulfillment center will be Amazon’s second in Alberta and its 11th in Canada, joining current fulfillment centers in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. It will be used to fulfill larger items such as outdoor equipment, patio furniture and bicycles

The new office in Toronto is 113,000 square feet and is part of its expansion of its Toronto Tech Hub where the company plans to create 600 new tech jobs in fields including software development, machine learning, cloud computing, digital advertising, and artificial intelligence.

Amazon currently has more than 800 corporate employees in Toronto, primarily focused on research and software development for customer fulfillment technology, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Alexa, as well as business development for Amazon Advertising and AWS.

Amazon’s Toronto Tech Hub is one of the company’s 18 Tech Hubs outside Seattle in North America, which together employ more than 20,000 people building new products and services for Amazon customers. The Toronto-based teams support the company’s global logistics and operations network by creating cutting-edge technology to enhance the delivery experience for customers. Additionally, the AWS team enables customers in the Greater Toronto Area to build in the cloud.
