Holiday Toy Crazes over the Years

Every holiday season, there’s always one toy that is a must-have. Ebates, the cash back shopping site, broke down the most popular and hardest toys to get over the past few decades.

Most popular for 2016 is the new NES Classic Mini! Nintendo’s latest game council loaded up with all the classic Nintendo favorites. Nintendo has always been a favorite, appearing on the list seven times, making its first appearance on the list of most popular and hardest to get toys in 1988.

A few additional gaming counsels have also taken rank:

  • Xbox 360 (2005)—the Xbox 360 sold a total of 5.5 million units during its first six months on the market.
  • Playstation 3 (2006)—the system was so popular upon its release that people became violent in their attempts to acquire one.

What was popular before Nintendo turned top gifts to gaming counsels?

  • Cabbage Patch Kids (1983)
  • Transformers (1984)
  • Teddy Ruxpin (1985-86)
  • Koosh Ball (1987)
