What Star Wars and Diaper Bags Tell Us About eBay Search

With the help of EcommerceBytes Blog readers, we conducted an experiment to test claims we’ve heard over the years involving eBay search bringing back inconsistent results.

We asked users to go to eBay.com and enter five specific search terms and report back their results in a blind survey. They searched eBay using Best Match with no filtering, and recorded the number of listings that were returned for the following five searches: Diaper Bag, Tackle Box, Hires Root Beer Metal Sign, Black Cocktail Dress, Star Wars Figure.

What we found was not only fascinating, but has implications for online sellers. EcommerceBytes 411 has the full results. For those who don’t subscribe to 411 – we’ll be opening up discussion on the EcommerceBytes Blog at which point we’ll share the results. (Now available – see the link below.) Know that the test did indeed reveal some variation in results along with one of the reasons why.
