eBay Hires Walmart Executive

eBay hired a Walmart.com executive to lead merchandising efforts for Fashion, Home & Garden, Collectibles & Art, and Lifestyle & Media. Jill Ramsey is eBay’s new Vice President of Soft Goods, North America. She spent 15 years at Walmart, having joined the retailer in 2000.

It wasn’t always the case that eBay hired executives with experience in retail or ecommerce, but it’s been the case since Hal Lawton joined the company as eBay’s new head of Marketplaces North America. Lawton himself comes from The Home Depot, and he recently hired another Home Depot alum as his Chief Marketing Officer – Suzy Deering worked at the retail chain in 2011 and joined eBay in August.

Ramsy, who will also report directly to Lawton, was previously Vice President of Softlines Merchandising for Walmart.com’s Home & Apparel division, where she “oversaw divisions of merchants responsible for substantial parts of Walmart.com’s revenues.” She also helped launch and evolve several parts of Walmart’s online business, including its gift registry, online pharmacy and tires ecommerce lines, eBay said.

Lawton was quoted in the announcement welcoming the executive and stating, “The timing of her arrival couldn’t be better as we prepare to enter the busy holiday retail season.”
