Online selling platform Bigcommerce said its small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) experienced a 34% average increase in sales in the fourth quarter. Its core clients include early-stage growing brands, and key categories that saw breakout performance included Consumer Electronics, Beauty, Bridal and Fashion.
The results come from the platform’s quarterly ecommerce report. According to Bigcommerce spokesperson John Yarbrough, the 34% growth is a blended per-store average across categories.
For U.S. SMBs selling online, this year’s “Cyber Five” holiday shopping weekend, spanning Thanksgiving Day to Cyber Monday, represented nearly 12% of all sales for the quarter.
Consumer electronics, the single largest ecommerce category among Bigcommerce merchants, was the top performing industry for the fourth quarter, bolstered by a massive 41 percent increase in per store sales and 19 percent increase in average order value.
The Beauty, Bridal and Fashion industry also remained a popular category for fast growth online businesses, illustrated by a 27% increase in per-store sales as compared to the same period in 2013.
Yarbrough said Bigcommerce does not disclose store counts but says the report encompasses “tens of thousands” of merchants based in the U.S.
Other categories where its merchants saw significant growth during Q4 included Outdoors and health and Lifestyle and Home.
It also found that shoppers buying from independent online retailers during the fourth quarter used a mobile device to complete 30% of purchases, while merchants received 25% of their total revenue through tablets and smartphones.
