Survey Asks, When Is the Best Time to End an Auction?

EcommerceBytes is surveying readers on the optimal day and time to end an auction. The site has periodically conducted surveys on this topic since 1999 and used the findings to update the Interactive Auction Calendar, a guide that many readers use as part of their listing strategy on online auction platforms.

Since there is a sense of urgency with auctions – buyers know auction listings will end – sellers typically try to end their auction listings when the largest numbers of buyers are online perusing listings. But what day of the week and time of day is busiest on auction site? And do holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas have an impact on when sellers should end their auction listings?

Before eBay made “Best Match” the default sort order, listings were sorted by time ending soonest in search results, and were sorted by “newly listed” when browsing. Despite the fact that fixed price now accounts for 71% of eBay’s total gross merchandise volume, many eBay sellers still try to optimize their auction ending times, particularly in certain categories.

Take the survey on Survey Monkey and leave a comment on the AuctionBytes Blog to let us know what you think of auction ending times.
