eBay Commits to Digital Shopping Technology in Retail Stores

Remember the eBay-powered touchscreensthat it displayed in store windows at Kate Spade in the spring that allowed shoppers to place orders “online”? eBay said this week it is committed to the technology and plans to scale it.

eBay announced a partnership with a shopping mall unit called Westfield Labs “that unites the power of mobile and online shopping with the physical retail world.” The companies introduced three digital storefronts at the Westfield San Francisco Centre where shoppers can select and purchase over 100 products from Sony, TOMS and Rebecca Minkoff in three windows on the fourth floor the mall from November 20 through January 12th.

Visitors can walk up to each digital storefront window, touch the glass and begin shopping. After shoppers select items they can proceed to checkout by pushing the order to their mobile phone and pay with PayPal. Delivery options include free home delivery or pick-up at the Sony Gallery located on the third level.

Each retailer has a personalized digital shopping experience. Sony offers a curated assortment of electronics gifts for the holidays, and is showcasing their technology innovation by powering all three digital shorefronts.

TOMS offers a selection of shoes and eyewear from its latest holiday collection, along with products from its newly launched TOMS Marketplace, and fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff offers handbags and accessories.

Steve Yankovich, head of Innovation and New Ventures at eBay, said the company plans to put the shoppable windows inside existing physical stores too and that the company has filed several patents covering the technology.

The Westfield Group also issued a press release wherein its global chief digital officer Kevin McKenzie said, “At Westfield Labs, we want to define what the future of retail will look like through social, mobile and digital innovations. For our first pilot, we are excited to partner with eBay Inc. and brands that are pushing the boundaries of online and offline retail to showcase new technology that redefines shopping. This is just a window into the types of technologies Westfield Labs will be launching in our international markets to provide people with memorable shopping experiences.”
