eBay Replaces Chief Communications Officer 5 Years after Firing Prior CCO

eBay named Gigi Ganatra Duff its new Chief Communications Officer, a role last filled by Steve Wymer, who eBay fired in 2019. But unlike Wymer or his predecessor Dan Tarman, Duff won’t report directly to eBay’s CEO. Instead, she will report to Julie Loeger, who joined eBay in 2021 as Chief Growth Officer at eBay, a new role at the time that combined Global Marketing and Global Customer Experience.

While not a chief officer, Michelle Friedman joined eBay as Vice President of Global Communications in September 2020 where, according to her LinkedIn profile, she served as advisor to the CEO, Chief Financial Officer, and the entire executive team, “communicating company’s transformation strategy by reframing narrative aimed at amplifying a rededication to the purpose and successful execution of a new strategy.” Friedman left eBay in April 2024.

Gigi Ganatra Duff joined eBay on September 23, 2024, where she leads the global communications team, including all internal and external communications, social media, public affairs, ESG communications, eBay Foundation, and content.

According to eBay’s announcement:

“A highly talented and experienced communicator, Gigi spent the last seven years at Nordstrom as the Vice President of Corporate Affairs. Over the past two decades, she has led corporate and employee communications, social impact, public affairs, and brand PR & event marketing teams across the hospitality, real estate, and retail sectors. She brings a particular passion for building strong brands and a deep commitment to advancing global impact through meaningful ESG strategies.”

Duff said, “As a passionate storyteller, I look forward to amplifying the impactful stories of eBay’s community and products, while fostering strong partnerships and experiences that help shape the brand’s vision. Together with this talented team, I’m eager to contribute to this next chapter of innovation and growth.”

  1. “Passionate storyteller”? She’ll have to concoct some magical stories to explain why her new boss, the “Growth Officer,” is achieving results, I.e., solid growth in number of buyers actively buying. Not.

    Seriously, I wish her well.
