Shoppers trying to pay with PayPal on Thursday experienced problems that were reported on various industry boards, social media sites, and on the Ecommerce EKG board.
Sellers said they could not login to PayPal, receiving “session timed out” error messages, and those who kept trying were locked out of their accounts for too many attempts to login (a security precaution).
One shopper who tried to purchase an item on Etsy said PayPal wouldn’t let her log in. She explained in a thread on the Etsy boards, “I would put in my password, but it would just time out. Too many tries so now I’m locked out of my PP account and still trying to resolve that problem. PP sent me recovery emails but I have not received them.”
As best we can determine, PayPal was experiencing issues for hours on Thursday. The company did not respond to EcommerceBytes inquiry about the issue.
Buyers and sellers also reported the problem on the site DownDetector. “PayPal locks up in checkout thru eBay,” wrote one buyer.
A seller wrote, “I’m losing sales because my eBay customers can’t pay with PayPal. What’s up?”
One user said they noticed PayPal outages tended to happen on Thursdays.
