The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) said the government appointed a special mediator today to assist Canada Post and the CUPW in reaching negotiated collective agreements.
In the meantime, the CUPW is conducting a rotating strike in Kelowna, BC today as rotating strikes in Toronto continue for a second day. It held 1-day strikes in Victoria, Edmonton, Windsor and Halifax on Monday. During the strikes, Canada Post does not deliver or pick up mail and parcels in affected areas.
Ahead of the breakdown Canada Post had advised that in the event of rotating legal strike, it would continue to accept, process and deliver mail and parcels in all other areas, and “once the temporary disruption ends, we would return to normal operations in the affected locations.”
However, the Canadian postal service noted yesterday: “Toronto is also a key processing hub for mail and parcels in Canada. The union’s rotating strike will therefore have a significant impact on our operations. Canada Post will make every effort to minimize the impact, but customers across the country may see delays for parcel and mail delivery.”
