eBay Leaves It to Sellers to Request Refund for Glitch

Rather than proactively refund sellers for a shipping label glitch, eBay is leaving it to sellers to request the refund. On Saturday, eBay showed it was charging sellers higher postage rates for certain shipping labels that were not set to go into effect until Sunday.

Sellers wrote about the glitch in a couple of threads on the eBay discussion boards. On Monday morning, an eBay moderator wrote:

“Good morning everyone. We see there is currently an open ticket for this issue (ALERT16054). Please reach out to customer service with this ticket number to have the additional charges refunded.”

eBay hasn’t updated its pinned thread reporting known technical issues since mid-June, so even sellers looking for confirmation of the glitch would not have seen the alert.

It appeared from the seller reports that only eBay shipping labels for eBay Standard Envelope (ESE) had been changed to display higher rates a day early.

Wastingtime101, a frequent commentor on the eBay boards who has a deep knowledge of shipping issues, expressed skepticism that sellers would actually be overcharged in this instance. But they did note that they generally take steps before shipping rate changes to mitigate any potential problems that might occur.
