‘eBay Authenticate’ Runs Promotion to Encourage Consignment Sales

eBay Authenticate promotion Fall 2018

eBay Authenticate promotion Fall 2018eBay is running a promotion to encourage people to use its eBay Authenticate consignment service to sell their luxury handbags. “Sellers” (consignors) can receive a 50% discount on seller fees associated with eBay Authenticate and will receive 90% of the item’s selling price instead of the standard 80%.

eBay Authenticate officially launched last fall. In eBay’s email announcing the promotion, it wrote, “Keep 90% of Your Luxury Handbag Sales. Experts authenticate, list, and sell your handbag for you. Barely lift a finger and fund your next bag.”

The promotion kicked off last month and runs through the end of January.

Excerpts from the terms of the promotion:

“Sellers who create an order through eBay Authenticate by Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 23:59:59 PT (11:59PM plus 59 seconds) will be eligible for a 50% discount on seller fees associated with eBay Authenticate, with no fee deducted from the selling price of an Eligible Item upon successful sale through eBay Authenticate (collectively, the “Promotion”). Through the Promotion, sellers receive 90% of the sale price of their Eligible Item (not including sales tax) instead of the standard 80%.

“During the Promotion Period, eligible items (“Eligible Item”) include handbags and wallets worth $250 or more from the following luxury brands: Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Chanel, Gucci, Céline, Fendi, Christian Dior, Prada, Goyard, Balenciaga, Burberry, Valentino, Chloé, Bottega Veneta and Saint Laurent.

“The discount will be reflected in a payment to your PayPal account within two business days of your buyer paying for an Eligible Item successfully sold through eBay Authenticate.”

eBay also explains that if an item’s authenticity cannot be verified, it will ship the item back to the consignor and the promotion will not apply. Be sure to read the terms for full details and restrictions.

  1. The Real Real has killed their consignment business. Reverb has killed their musical instrument business. Etsy has killed their craft business.

Ebay is simply dying. They need to embrace their past to move into the future.

  2. Actually, the way things are headed, ebay should worry about authenticating it’s own balance sheet.
