eBay is running a 1-day, sitewide sale today on items that are priced at $25 or more. Sales are nothing new on eBay, but usually they are restricted to a tiny group of sellers or through its Daily Deals.
What’s different today is that the coupon is nearly sitewide – only a few categories are excluded (“Eligible items exclude items from the Coins & Paper Money, Gift Cards & Coupons, and Real Estate categories.”)
Shoppers must use a coupon code, and take note of the time restrictions: “The Coupon is a 20% discount, valid from 8:00 AM PST March 9, 2018 until 8:00 PM PST on March 9, 2018.”
There are some other restrictions, including “Discount applies to the purchase price (excluding shipping, handling, and taxes) of eligible item(s) of $25 or more and will be capped at a value of $100,” which you can find on this page.
Here’s eBay’s description of the sale:

Five anchor stores and three buying id’s…All got an email notice of the sale. Looked for awhile and couldn’t find anything to buy. Deleted the coupons. Just a waste of time with seach all messed up and all the duplicate crap you have to wade through to find something. I can just go to Amazon and get what I need in a few minutes. Sorry fleabag you gotta straighten out the mess before I will spend anytime to find something.
I have a Premium store. NEVER was notified of sale. Sales today are down 50% from average daily gross in March so far. I am an ACTIVE seller….and I didn’t know about this sale until a few minutes ago. I’d say that’s a marketing problem 🙂
To add to my original post, I wouldn’t discount the fact that they don’t advertise it because they don’t want to take the $ hit. BUT, they do want to do it so they can shower their shareholders and the board with all their good news they have. LOL
I am a small-medium sized seller, and all this did for me was generate one sale. I typically sell more on a normal Friday. Wonder if they promoted this on Facebook, or did they just expect word-of-mouth buzz? If there was some type of press release so perhaps TV stations could announce it on their local morning news shows, this sounds like it would have been a success.
EBay has to be applauded for attempting this- may have been just a one-time experiment, who knows. What it may show to their brass is that the site is not the destination it once was.
