Not Too Late for Sellers to Sign up for Free Shipping Day

With just days to go until the ninth-annual Free Shipping Day on Friday, Dec. 16, stores that haven’t participated in past events are signing up to offer free shipping and delivery by Christmas Eve. Lululemon, Banana Republic, GameStop, American Eagle, G.H. Bass Co., J. Crew Factory and Buffalo by David Bitton are among such merchants, with Walmart participating for the second year in a row.

“We always see last-minute sign-ups during the week leading up to Free Shipping Day,” says event founder Luke Knowles. “It’s not uncommon for us to be adding stores just hours before the site goes live.” Currently, the event website features 972 merchants.

Knowles is no stranger to the last-minute nature of the popular online event, having hatched the idea within two weeks of its initial launch in 2008. Just three years later, Free Shipping Day became a billion-dollar shopping holiday, and continues to be a customer favorite. Last year, the event pulled in nearly $1.5 billion in online sales, according to Adobe Insights.

Managed by a team of a dozen employees, Free Shipping Day features well-known stores as well as independent online retailers. “As a small business owner, I enjoy the opportunity to offer high-level media exposure for small businesses as well as the big companies,” continues Knowles.

There is no fee to sign up, though merchants must offer free shipping without minimum order requirements and guarantee delivery by Christmas Eve for orders placed on Dec. 16.

Retailers interested in participating can submit their information through the merchant sign-up form. Offers will go live starting at 12:01 a.m. ET on Friday, Dec. 16, at FreeShippingDay.com.
