eBay UK Tries Making Buying and Selling Easier

eBay continues to try and attract consumer sellers, and in the UK, it’s launching new services as part of that strategy, including eBay Local. The service is designed to help bring buyers and sellers together locally by enabling local search.

eBay UK posted about it on its Facebook pagelast week, and used a video to tell the story. The clip shows vintage toy action figures come to life, with a consumer easily listing an item and a buyer doing a search using eBay Local to find vintage action figures within a mile of their location.

Once purchased, a newly acquired toy hero begins battling the seller’s existing action figure (a villain), and eBay wrote on the Facebook post, “Two fates. One destiny…the power of eBay Local. More than 13 million items on eBay are waiting to be collected locally right now. Log on, search and buy it now. WARNING: These items might include vintage collectible toys destined to eternal battle.”

There have been cases where sellers have expressed concern about having their location information exposed to those searching online, however.

We asked eBay UK PR how eBay Local fits in with Gumtree or other eBay Classifieds properties but have not received a response.

eBay UK is also advertising eBay Neighborhood, which we wrote about last month. This program is designed to help people sell their goods on a consignment basis and appears to be similar to the eBay Valet program in the US.

Update: eBay UK told us that the location information does not identify people’s exact address.
