Etsy Wants to Help Budding Fashion Designers

In many fields, you no longer have to take a traditional path to success, as social networking sites and YouTube demonstrate. Now Etsy has a message for budding fashion designers: you can find success on its marketplace.

Etsy created a 6 1/2-minute video advising designers to build a following by selling at local marketplaces, selling wholesale to retailers, and setting up a shop on its marketplace and selling direct. It provides other tips such as understanding your target market and distinguishing yourself with exceptional customer service.

According to, Etsy collaborated with education portal Qubed, Parsons The New School for Design, and Teen Vogue on the video.

The publication spoke to one of the designers featured in the video, Reuben Reuel, a New York City designer with his own company specializing in African prints, who told Biz Journals that rather than go the traditional route and try to attract buyers and use a PR agent, he liked the opportunity to interact directly with the people buying his designs.

The theme of the video is “forging your own way in fashion,” and now that Etsy supports manufactured goods, Etsy becomes an option for designers who want to scale their operations.
