eBay Expands Its Valet Consignment Service

Is it too hard to sell on eBay? That’s the reaction of one user on the eBay discussion boards upon hearing of its newly expanded consignment service.

eBay Valet is described as a professional selling service, and this week the company issued a press release stating it would now accept high end clothing, in addition to shoes, handbags, electronics and other popular household items. “eBay Valet does all the work for consumers; from estimating the price, to taking professional pictures, to the quick and safe shipment of items to buyers, and everything in between.”

Lending credence to the user’s theory that consumers may be finding it difficult to list on eBay, the announcement went on to say, “As such an easy way to make money on eBay, consumers may find themselves frequently turning to their closets in search of something to sell with eBay Valet.”

In the terms section of the site, eBay explains that consumers receive 60-80% of the proceeds from the sale of items depending on the final sale price. But eBay left the door open to additional fees: “At this time, the Program is in a promotional phase and, as a result, the only costs to you are the 20-40% fee charged by the valet for listing and selling your items.”

Two logistics firms are powering the program – ModusLink and Ingram Micro Logistics. That’s a big change from years ago when eBay promoted an army of Trading Assistants and drop-off stores (such as the fictional shop featured in the move, “40 Year Old Virgin”).

eBay spokesperson Karen Crocker Snell had told EcommerceBytes in April that the company continues to test and pilot new programs to help simplify and streamline the selling process on eBay. She said eBay Valet was a pilot program with a national mail-in component and a drop-off component in select locations – Los Angeles and Atlanta.

Vincent Payen heads Consumer Selling for eBay Marketplaces. In Thursday’s press release he said, “By making selling online accessible to more sellers, eBay Valet contributes to the wide selection of unique and hard-to-find items that are available on eBay. eBay Valet is a quick and easy way for anyone to sell everything from designer clothing and handbags to electronics and household items.”
