eBay Explains Fee Hike Incident

Adding insult to injury, eBay increased fees for media sellers a day before a fee hike was supposed to go into effect.

As part of the Spring Seller Update, eBay raised fees for media sellers from 5 cents to 30 cents effective May 1st. But on Thursday April 30, sellers said they were being charged the new fees.

eBay spokesperson Karen Crocker Snell acknowledged the problem, responding on Friday to EcommerceBytes’ inquiry. “There was a technical issue that resulted in some media sellers being charged new fees earlier than we planned yesterday for approximately three hours. We quickly credited back the fees to these sellers.”

Some sellers said they were disappointed not to be able to get last-minute listings up at the old rate before the fee hike took effect. We had asked if eBay planned to make it up to sellers in some way for the fact some said they had to stop listing, fearing the new fees, and losing their last opportunity to list at the lower fees. Snell did not address that question.
