What Are You Wearing, PayPal Asks Online Holiday Shoppers

PayPal got personal in a new survey of holiday shoppers, asking respondents, “what do you prefer to wear when you’re shopping online or on mobile (smartphone or tablet)?”

The eBay payments unit commissioned the survey which conducted by GfK Custom Research North America from December 5 – 7, 2014. It found that 69% of people wear sweats or PJs while shopping online or on mobile devices.

And it learned that one-third of the respondents had used their mobile device to help in some way with their holiday shopping.

PayPal didn’t stop with the probing questions – it also asked respondents who said they had used their mobile devices to do holiday shopping if they had done so from a restroom, restaurant, doctor’s office, important meeting at work, or from the Thanksgiving dinner table.

A surprising 60% of respondents declined to respond to this question (“this holiday season, have you shopped on your mobile device (tablet or smartphone) from any of the following places?”).

But of those who did respond, 15% of them admitted to shopping for the holidays from a restroom. And of those, nearly a third (29%) were under the age of 25.

The most popular location out of the options provided was a restaurant (17%). And 10% of respondents admitted to shopping during Thanksgiving Dinner.

Another surprise: 43% of respondents said they don’t do last-minute shopping. Of those who do, 10% admitted to shopping for themselves.
