eBay Mistakenly Sends Promotion to Sellers Who Can’t Participate

eBay is running a promotion to encourage sellers to list certain automotive items, although some recipients of the invitation said they don’t sell on eBay Motors and discovered they weren’t actually invited to participate after all.

Invited sellers who are eligible to participate can list up to 10,000 fixed price listings on eBay.com/motors – Parts & Accessories and Automotive Tools & Supplies only – and pay no insertion fees (3, 5, 7, 10, and 30-day listing durations included). eBay requires invited sellers to activate the promotion by selecting “Activate offer” in the invitation email or on the promotion landing page.

An eBay seller who received the invitation wrote to EcommerceBytes, “We were just given the most WORTHLESS promo in eBay’s history. Well, for extra fun, they limit listings to eBay Motors. Why even BOTHER? Then when I click on it, it says: Unfortunately, this promotional offer is not available to you. We do not SELL car parts, and they know it. Thanks for nothing.”

Another seller wrote, “Got the following email (through mymessages on ebay). I clicked to activate and got the following error message: “Unfortunately, this promotional offer is not available to you.” So apparently now they tease us by sending us offers that we are not eligible for?”

eBay has been having problems lately with emails sent to sellers.

On the eBay boards on Monday, a member of the eBay Selling team apologized for the problem, writing, “Our apologies for this issue. Some sellers might have experienced an issue when trying to activate the promotion they were invited to today. Please try to click the link again as we have resolved the issue.”

But frustration and confusion continued. In another thread, one seller wrote, “I was all ready to start listings, but they were books, not motors.”

A seller replied, “Apparently it’s not meant to be just for the motors and they’ve fixed it now,” but the promotion landing page describing terms and conditions still reads that the promotion is limited to listings on eBay Motors.

The promotion runs from July 7 through August 11, all other fees apply, see eBay website for details and restrictions.
