Etsy Works to Improve Shipping Labels for Sellers

Etsy is working to improve shipping labels for sellers who purchase postage directly on the marketplace and has tested several changes with a group of 3,500 sellers before making them available this month.

USPS First Class Package Service for domestic orders is now available to sellers on Etsy for packages weighing over 13 ounces and less than one pound. The significance? “This service will be a more cost effective solution for you if you typically choose to send parcels weighing between 13 and 16 ounces via Priority Mail.”

Etsy said it had worked with the Postal Service to provide the option to all sellers on Etsy and said it was an option found in few other venues, though sellers discussing the news said the rates were available through electronic postage providers, which are particularly popular with sellers who list on multiple channels.

Etsy also changed the label purchase page, adding a more vertical design. “After testing this format in prototype, we found sellers on average were able to complete their label purchases more quickly and with fewer hurdles.”

Another change is customized notes to buyers when purchasing multiple labels in a single session. Notes to buyers are attached to an individual label rather than a bulk label purchase, letting sellers personalize messages for individual customers. (Default notes to buyers are still available for all labels – now, sellers simply edit notes on a per label basis if desired.)

Much of the news was welcomed by sellers. “This is great! I have a lot of 14 oz packages. I can save my customers some money,” said one. “I really like the idea of customizing notes to individual buyers. I can’t wait to use this feature,” said another.

But some sellers raised concerns about how their local post offices would handle the new First Class Package Service for higher weights. An Etsy moderator reassured sellers, explaining that the weight limit for First Class was associated with Commercial Price Plus rates, and writing, “We’ve worked with the USPS to ensure post offices are up to speed with this new weight limit for First Class packages coming from Etsy sellers. We’ve also tested this in prototype with many sellers who have used it successfully, so not to worry – your packages should go through as planned!”
