eBay is running a 6-week campaign to attract new sellers to the site. The eBay Seller Referral Program kicked off on May 8 and will run through June 19, 2014. The program offers invited sellers and the friends they refer a $15 coupon each for following the rules of the promotion.
eBay sent emails to select eBay sellers requesting that they refer a friend to create an eBay listing during the promotion. A “Referred Friend” must be an eBay member who has never sold before or who has been inactive as a seller for at least 12 months. The email invitation read:
“Refer a friend, get a $15 Coupon Help a friend earn extra cash! When your friend lists an item for the first time, you’ll both get a $15 eBay Coupon. Refer five friends, get $75. Ends June 19”
Sellers invited to participate in the program (“referrers”) must go to this page on Tenthwave’s Promotw.com website and sign in, then provide the email addresses of friends they wish to refer.
“You may only enter the email addresses of people with whom you have a personal or business relationship,” according to the terms.
Referred friends will receive an email with a unique link for the referrer asking them to start selling on eBay.com during the life of the program. If a referred friend clicks on the unique link in the email or in a social media post and follows all directions to create a listing, they will qualify for a coupon.
eBay warned sellers who use social media sites to promote the program that they must disclose to friends they too are receiving a coupon if the friend lists an item on eBay.
eBay is limiting referrers to five coupons and is limiting referred friends to one coupon.
