eBay’s acquisition of Depop officially went through on Thursday, with eBay paying Etsy $1.4 billion. Vital for sellers to know: eBay vowed to operate the UK company as a complementary business and retain the Depop brand, platform, customer experience, and culture.
“By combining Depop’s category leadership with eBay’s global scale and capabilities — including shipping, personalization, compliance, and trusted services — we will enhance the buyer and seller experience and accelerate growth,” eBay said in its July 30, 2026 announcement.
eBay called Depop a “consumer to consumer fashion marketplace with a highly-engaged Gen Z and Millennial customer base” in its announcement on July 30th and wrote:
“The acquisition builds on eBay’s continued momentum in fashion, a more than $10 billion annual GMV category for the company. With millions of users buying and selling fashion items, Depop has built one of the most vibrant and fastest-growing communities in fashion resale and cultivated a distinct, community-driven platform rooted in discovery, creativity, and peer-to-peer connection. Its highly engaged customer base and accessibly priced fashion inventory make Depop a natural complement to eBay’s leading proposition in C2C commerce. eBay intends to support Depop’s continued growth while preserving the elements that make the marketplace unique to accelerate the future of circular fashion.”
Etsy had acquired Depop in 2022 for $1.625 billion and installed longtime Etsy executive Kruti Patel Goyal as Depop CEO. Her bio on Etsy includes the following about her time running Depop:
“During her tenure, she strengthened Depop’s core marketplace proposition and prioritized product development and marketing strategies that differentiated the company in the growing secondhand market. Together, these initiatives accelerated gross merchandise sales and established Depop as the fastest-growing online apparel resale marketplace in the United States.”
Goyal moved back from Depop to become President of Etsy in December 2024 and changed roles again this year, replacing former Etsy CEO Josh Silverman on January 1, 2026.
Etsy said eBay paid approximately $1.4 billion in cash for Depop, “reflecting the purchase price of $1.2 billion plus $200 million of net purchase price adjustments and interest. The net cash proceeds are further subject to certain post-closing adjustments.” It referred to its previous statement about how it planned to utilize the proceeds, “which included plans to accelerate its share repurchase program.”
Etsy’s Goyal was quoted in Thursday’s press release:
“We are excited for what’s next for both Etsy and Depop. This transaction allows us to move forward with a clear focus on building the best marketplace for Etsy’s buyers and sellers, and is a strong outcome for our shareholders. We’re proud of what the Depop team has built – a truly differentiated brand with a passionate community – and we wish them continued success as part of eBay.”
Meanwhile, Depop CEO Peter Semple posted on LinkedIn on Thursday:
“Today marks the beginning of an incredible new chapter for Depop. Joining eBay means we can move even faster toward a future where resale is the natural way to shop for fashion, while continuing to build on what makes the Depop community and experience so special.
“I’m exceptionally proud of what our team has built, grateful to everyone who’s been part of our journey so far – including our colleagues at Etsy.
“I’m very, very excited for what we’ll achieve together next.”
eBay and Etsy will both release their respective second-quarter earnings after the market closes on Wednesday. eBay will hold its Q2 earnings call on Wednesday, while Etsy will hold off until Thursday morning to make its presentation to analysts.
eBay CEO Jamie Iannone said in Thursday’s announcement that his goal was to preserve the Depop brand, community, and product experience while exploring synergies with eBay that could “supercharge our combined growth potential.”
For sellers on both platforms – eBay and its brand new subsidiary Depop – the changes eBay chooses to make to create synergies could impact them greatly, though it’s too soon to know if it may boost their reach and sales or potentially add challenges.
