eBay informed sellers this week of the Mexican government’s recent changes to its import regulations. eBay advised sellers they must provide certain information to carriers in order to comply when shipping to Mexico:
“Since January 1 2025, all eBay sellers shipping to Mexico are required to provide detailed customer information to their shipping carrier. This information will improve shipment tracking, minimize the risk of fraudulent transactions, and help you maintain and potentially expand your presence in Mexico without experiencing delivery disruptions.”
However, one seller wondered how they were supposed to comply with the policy “when eBay masks buyer email addresses with a members.ebay.com email.” They asked on a thread on the eBay discussion boards if sellers would have to contact every buyer having their package shipped to Mexico post-sale, then cancel if the buyer does not respond.
An eBay moderator replied, “We are checking with the Shipping team and we will get back with you once we know more.”
eBay said the information sellers must provide to shipping carriers for orders to Mexico are the following:
- Recipient’s full name
- Recipient’s email address
- Recipient’s phone number
- Detailed item descriptions (vague descriptions won’t be accepted)
- Recipient’s Mexican Tax ID (RFC), or, if unavailable, the National ID (CURP)
The announcement is posted on the eBay website.
While I would never ship to Mexico on my own, as their postal service is just as corrupt as their government and they will steal anything you send, I have shipped to Mexico through eBay’s International shipping. The problem I still see is these countries require all kinds of different information, and eBay does not get it from the buyer at time of purchase. Even normal shipment, I have had 4 items returned in 2025 because of insufficient address. One literally had a street name with no number. I do not look at them as a print, I have to assume that either the buyer knows their own address or that eBay would require a proper address to complete the transaction, but it looks like eBay requires neither.
One more country not to ship to. What happens if retaliatory tariffs kick in mid-transit between the seller and the buyer?
