ChatGPT Ads Launch a Day after Being Mocked in Super Bowl Commercials

Anthropic ran ads during Sunday’s Super Bowl football game that mocked its rival OpenAI for its decision to run ads on its AI chatbox, though it didn’t mention it by name. The ads showed how disconcerting it could be for people to get gen-AI responses that include a pitch for a product. But one day after the ads ran, OpenAI officially announced the launch of ads on ChatGPT.

In a tweet on Monday afternoon, OpenAI posted the following message:

We’re starting to roll out a test for ads in ChatGPT today to a subset of free and Go users in the U.S.

Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Ads are labeled as sponsored and visually separate from the response.

Our goal is to give everyone access to ChatGPT for free with fewer limits, while protecting the trust they place in it for important and personal tasks.

OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer Vijaye Raji also took to LinkedIn where he wrote the following message:

Today we’re beginning ads testing in ChatGPT in the U.S.

In the last several months, we’ve built the first version of ads in ChatGPT – but the product is still in its early stages. As we continue to roll out ads and onboard advertising partners, we’re going to learn a lot and continue to make improvements.

One thing that will not change is our commitment to our ads principles, which you can read in full here: https://lnkd.in/geE8Te2f.

It’s been really cool to see our team build a product around these principles, which we hope will shape not just our product but the direction of the industry as a whole.

Thank you to our early launch partners for working with us. If you’re interested in learning more about advertising on ChatGPT, go to https://lnkd.in/g7SdQtED.

Oh, and if you’d like to come work on this, see out my last post about open roles on the Monetization team.

Anthropic, which developed the Claude AI assistant, posted the following ads on YouTube:

The tagline of the ads read as follows: “Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.”

According to CNBC, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared a post on X calling the ads “funny” but “clearly dishonest.”
