eBay Gross Merchant Volume Rises 2% in the 3rd Quarter

eBay grew third-quarter Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) by 2% to $18.3 billion, or up 1% on an FX-Neutral basis, year-over-year. eBay defines GMV as follows: “Gross Merchandise Volume consists of the total value of all paid transactions between users on our platforms during the applicable period inclusive of shipping fees and taxes.”

eBay grew the number of buyers by 1 percent, year-over-year, to 133 million. eBay defines the metric as follows: “Active Buyers consist of all buyers who paid for a transaction on our platforms within the previous 12-month period. Buyers may register more than once, and as a result, may have more than one account. Our acquisitions completed during the periods shown have not materially impacted Active Buyers.”

eBay grew revenue by 3% to $2.6 billion, year-over-year.

In Wednesday’s press release, eBay CEO Jamie Iannone said: “We achieved another quarter of positive GMV growth and delivered strong results across our key metrics. Our Focus Categories and geo-specific investments are driving momentum in the business, and we are leveraging the power of Al to create magical innovations for our customers.”

eBay’s Chief Financial Officer Steve Priest was quoted: “eBay delivered strong top and bottom line results in Q3. Solid execution within our strategic initiatives drove continued GMV growth amid a dynamic macro environment, and we are continuing to invest for the long-term while generating significant earnings growth and capital returns for shareholders.”

  1. Didn’t USPS rates go up in July? Does that alone – given eBay takes a cut of shipping – account for the rise in GMV? A better measure of how sales are actually doing would be to net out the shipping cut.

Hey eBay, how much of a kickback are you giving PM DeJoy?

  2. Unimpressive numbers. GMV is not even keeping up with inflation and buyer growth is stagnant.
