eBay said 97% of small businesses on its platforms in the EU are exporters, compared to 4.8% of traditional enterprises. It announced the availability of its EU Small Business Export Report on Friday.
“For nearly three decades, eBay has been at the forefront of opening new markets worldwide to small businesses, regardless of location, and empowering exports at unprecedented rates,” it said in the announcement, sharing that in the majority of EU member states, the top-10 export markets for eBay small businesses included at least four that were not in the top 10 for traditional businesses.
Entrepreneurial small businesses in every EU member state use eBay to reach over 130 million consumers across over 190 markets. The company considered “eBay small businesses” to be those registered as business enterprises in one of the 27 member states of the European Union with sales of EUR 9.510 ($10,000 in US dollars) or more annually on the eBay marketplace.
eBay classifies businesses with sales to four or more continents in a year to be “Global Sellers.” It said 34% of eBay small businesses across the EU reached the Global Seller threshold in 2022. In 22 EU member states, over half of the eBay small businesses were Global Sellers.
“Country-by-country, top eBay selling communities can be found in a wide mix of regions whether viewed through the lens of GDP per capita, population, or population density,” eBay said its report found. “This selling activity is often a counterweight to in-country geographic imbalance proving that digitalisation of small business can support inclusive opportunities and sustainable economic growth.”
The report includes data and charts, and the Appendix breaks down the top-10 cross-border destination markets for each member state. eBay published the report on its eBayMainStreet.com website.
