For a time we ran a feature where sellers shared stories about the first sale they made online. But have you ever thought about the very first online purchase you made? While that can be a fun exercise, sometimes you
need to check your online transaction history, as was the case for
a buyer who posted on Twitter (X) on Friday:
"I have a piece of art that I bought on @ebay circa 2008/2009. Spent an hour on the phone with customer service trying to find the history and transaction. Nothing from my old eBay account is saved! Frustrated! Angry!!"
An eBay moderator replied with some disappointing but educational information: eBay only allows buyers to view transactions for the past 7 years, although they provided a link where buyers could try and get information about older purchases:
"Purchase history only goes back 7 years. We aren't able to guarantee anything, but you can try submitting a request here> http://spkl.io/6019AoUw5 to see if your older purchases can be pulled."
The URL the eBay moderator provided went to page where users can request "Access, Deletion, or Opt-Out." There is a form on the page, but only options listed in a pulldown menu under "Type of request" are the following:
Delete Account and Personal Data from eBay
Obtain a copy of Personal Data from eBay
Unsubscribe from eBay direct marketing
Other privacy requests
It's not a user-friendly form where you can simply ask if it to retrieve your older transaction history. Here's the note underneath the form:
"Please note that eBay is required to verify the identity of everyone to whom we release personal data. To process your request, we will need your first name, last name, country of residence, site username (for registered eBay users), the email address registered to your account (for registered eBay users) or the email you used for any guest transactions (for non-registered users), and a description of the nature of your request. Before fulfilling your request, we'll ask you for proof of identity (POI) and proof of address (POA) to ensure that you are authorized to make the request. The POI/POA you provide will be used solely for the purpose of identity verification related to your privacy request, and will be processed and stored in accordance with our User Privacy Notice."
Have you ever looked up your transaction history on eBay to see how far back it goes? What about on other marketplaces? Do you have a system in place to save your online buying history on eBay and elsewhere?
