eBay Promo Targets Young New Yorkers This Month

By: Ina Steiner

eBay invited New Yorkers to sell for free through the end of March in Baby, Fashion, and Home Decor, which are popular categories among younger generations. A seller who received the invitation on Tuesday said they immediately took advantage of the promotion by selling a vintage bag for $6 plus shipping and were able to earn the entire selling price, with zero fees taken out.

The invitation greeted the recipient with the salutation, "Hello, New York," even though the seller said they were based in New Jersey. The seller shared the full text of the invitation in a post on the eBay discussion boards.

The promotional landing page on eBay also includes FAQs.

eBay CEO Jamie Iannone recently talked about the "sell-to-buy flywheel" when referencing a statistic about users on Depop, which eBay is in the process of acquiring from Etsy and is popular with younger buyers. Iannone told Wall Street analysts last month that over one-third of Depop buyers also listed one or more products last year - which appears to be a tactic in running the current eBay promotion by enticing users to sell.

To qualify for the invitation-only promotion, items must be sold between 3/3 and 3/31 and is limited to 25 items sold in Baby, Fashion, and Home Decor categories - be sure to read the fine print if you receive an invitation.

Lets see how eBay treats a 27 veteran of eBay, with not a single chargeback on the account form buyers.

One legit negative feedback for a out of stock item.

The one day they suddenly demand receipts for all items sold and listed during the last 60 days, then suspend the account.

2000:

Scam seller who shipped defective item.  I sent item back. Seller then relisted item without refunding money. I contacted all the bidders on item and told them this was stolen property. Found shill bidder was be used on item and I got that account suspended as they had a nonfunctioning email. Seller then left negative feedback claiming I had substituted broken parts for seller's good parts. File claim with eBay's Lloyds of London buyer insurance program via mail but never heard anything back from them. Paid via check so could not file a chargeback. Reported to two attorney generals and USPS Postal Inspectors. This feedback no longer appears although it was on the account for most of account's history.

I stopped selling on eBay for a period of time in disgust.

2002:

I strongly suspect that #1, #2, #3 and #5 were all retaliation by associates of the seller from 2000. All low buyer feedback accounts.

1. Nonpaying bidder leaves negative feedback.

2. Buyer claims part did not fit car. In messages buyer admits he looked at the generic image that the manufacturer places on front panel of the each part's box instead of reading the actual text description which clearly states what makes and models it fits.

3. Buyers leaves negative for wrong account and leaves followup message stating to disregard feedback.

4. Multiple quantity auction for two "left" car parts. Discovered one was a mislabeled "right part", but could not change quantity for listing as it already had a bid.

I should have cancelled the bid, ended the listing, changed the quantity, and relisted it. Instead I simply added a note to the listed stating there was only one available. Sure enough there was a second lower bidder who was automatically sent an invoice by eBay, but there was no second part. Out of stock negative.

5. Nonpaying bidder leaves negative feedback.

2017:

Buyer claims in feedback item was not as described, but makes no prior attempt to address the issue prior to leaving negative feedback.

Buyer makes claim in feedback that item is not make of a particular substance, yet the listing does not state its made of of this substance and specifically states "unknown". This feedback no longer appears.

2021:

18 days after obtaining figurine buyers claims its chipped. Messages a photo of a portion of base, which clearly show its not the same figurine at all. The same figurine has been sold for decades by the manufacturer using a variety of similar molds and each is glazed slightly different by hand.

Several other negative feedbacks removed from international bidders trying to retaliate for cancelling their purchase for violating my terms of service that clearly state they are not to purchase anything.

eBay wants the newb sellers who don't have decades of knowledge about just how evil the people that run eBay are.

Seems like a lot of press to brag on a $6 sale.  Outside the box no less.  Even extrapolated.  And even then, not much of an aggregate ‘fee’ is really sacrificed if eBay can use this latest ‘best face forward’ enticement (bet none of these finds itself ‘hidden’, et. al.) to prop up user numbers for next qtr’s story.

They’d never call it what it really is though.  eBay sells nothing. So this is their version of inventory acquisition.

The first one’s always ‘free’.  Now where have I heard that before.  Oh well.  This is usually how “young people” learn.  The hard way.

"by selling a vintage bag for $6 plus shipping"

If that were my average sale I'd have been out of business a long time ago.  Buyer just better hope that in 29 days she doesn't check her eBay messages and see a SNAD return request.  She could actually end up losing money.   "Rent and Return" is a thing in fashion categories on eBay and their rent is refunded if it's a SNAD.

" A seller who received the invitation on Tuesday said they immediately took advantage of the promotion by selling a vintage bag for $6 plus shipping and were able to earn the entire selling price, with zero fees taken out."

Sounds like a TYPICAL eBay move.

$6? really? $6?

No one except the shipping co made any money and THIS is some kind of win? $6? Did the seller buy it for 25 cents at a flea market? What did eBay get out of it all?

Just so much stupidity from supposedly "smart" people .... not.

$1.2b for Depop and this is what comes of it?
