eBay Rolls Back New Feature, Credits Sellers $25

eBay began rolling out a little-known new feature, but when sellers saw a field for "Your cost" for the first time, many wondered what it was and how eBay had calculated the number. One confused seller wrote about the new field in a thread posted on September 20, 2025, explaining they had never provided eBay with the cost of their goods.

After much speculation in posts on the discussion boards, an eBay moderator (identified as "Community Team") responded on September 26 and explained the feature, adding that a "system error" had led eBay to mistakenly generate some values for some sellers:

"We want to share an update about a recently discovered issue with the new "Your cost" field, currently rolling out to some sellers. This optional field allows you to enter your item acquisition cost for your bookkeeping purposes. It is private, visible only to you, and never shown to buyers.

"Due to a system error, some values were mistakenly generated for some sellers. While these incorrect values may have appeared when viewing offers or orders, they were not buyer-facing, and your earnings and payouts were not impacted.

"For now we have rolled back the feature, and will provide updates once it's ready to relaunch. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

One of the sellers who was impacted by the glitch said eBay promised them a credit of $25 in the following message eBay sent them on September 26th:

"A system error has affected the data, so eBay is temporarily removing any cost information sellers have entered.

"Rest assured: your cost info was never visible to buyers or other sellers, and your earnings and payouts were not impacted.

"As a gesture of goodwill, eBay is issuing a $25 account credit to sellers who used the feature. This will appear in your account within 24–48 hours."

Regarding the feature itself, some sellers said they had long awaited a field to be able to enter the cost of their items, while others said it was information they would never feel comfortable sharing with eBay.

eBay has yet to formally announce the new "Your cost" feature, but announced it to sellers who attended (in-person or virtually) its eBay Open conference last month. In the following video of the conference workshop, David Bernstein, eBay Manager of Product Management for Seller Experience, explains the new feature (at about 6 minutes in):

Given the fact sellers who use the feature would rely on its accuracy - including when making decisions about whether to accept a low offer from a buyer - it doesn't inspire confidence that eBay fumbled the feature by adding incorrect data, and then deleted all data sellers had taken the time to enter.

"adding that a "system error" had led eBay to mistakenly generate some values for some sellers"

Liars!

There is no such animal.

One or more persons at eBay had to write multiple lines of code to retrieve the data, parse the data, display the data and allows users to interact with it.

eBay makes you want to believe its another glitch caused by a cockroach eating through some cable in one of their servers, which in itself is impossible as eBay maintains multiple copies of its system and database at multiple geographical locations in case of local natural disasters.

"It is private, visible only to you, and never shown to buyers."

Liars. eBay can see it and use it.

I don't need this feature as many items are bought in bulk so the price per item is almost nothing. For example; I purchase 3 cardboard flats of mugs for $2.50 at a auction and sell one mug out of one flat for $75.

It makes zero sense for me to waste time trying to document how I maybe spent $.08 a mug. Instead the total price of the lot goes into my inventory cost to be sold or donated for a charity deduction.

I simply don't forget how much I pay for higher priced items, even years later. I spent $22 for a box of dolls and sold one out of the box for $2,200 ($33.10 and $3,310 in 2025 dollars). That was nearly 20 years ago.

NEVER EVER share data with eBay - unless they pay you UP FRONT and you are %101 ok with sharing that data with the entire WWW.

eBay data mines ALL its users - especially sellers - and sells it to  different groups.

Its none of their business what you payed for anything, how much you make/made, where it came from (unless compelled by law), or anything else.

eBay already sells and uses your pics and item specifics and gives you NOTHING in return.

Once burnt, twice shy (ty Great White) - eBay is not your friend, partner or anything else. They are people in San Jose who steal your funds and items AT WILL.

KNOW who you deal with!

Never ever give eBay (or anyone else, I learned long ago) any information that isn't necessary.  Next thing you know they will be in cahoots with authorities trying to investigate you and who knows whether what they provide will be accurate. Keep accurate honest records yourself.  There is NO WAY to know how or where they will SHARE your information with WHOM!

A new technique by buying agents acting on the behalf of foreign buyers today.

After awhile their repeatedly used freight forwarding company addresses get reported on BadBuyerOrg so sellers know right away the item is not being bought by a legit U.S. customer.

One a recent order they turned to using a UPS Store ad their collection point. They then go an pick up the items in bulk and have them processed by their regular freight forwarding company since this is cheaper than having UPS freight forward the item.

Buy this buying agent left his name on the order and than name is connected with a freight forwarding company. So nice try but no dice.

Of course eBay could care less. The phone number provided is not even for this person - it belongs to someone else. Another case of eBay colluding with foreign buying agents and their freight forwarders to trick you into selling to foreign buyers.

Like all rapists - when you say "NO" to eBay it means "YES" to them!

You don't need anyone to keep your records for you. Twenty-five years ago, when I started selling on eBay I set up an inventory in Excel. At the end of the year, I save that year's final inventory & then delete everything that sold during the previous year. This version becomes my new inventory list. I can easily provide my value of stock on hand by totaling the price paid column.
It is saved on my desktop, which is what I use for everything. So anytime I get an offer, I can quickly check what I paid for that item, or in most cases, for the lot of items & how much I have received for the previously sold items.
Bottom line, eBay sticks its nose into enough of your business; they do not need to know that you managed to score a real bargain when you bought that $900.00 item that you just sold.

eBay is more interested in trying to sell this data and use it to develop their own strategies, perhaps even steering partners into high profit areas. I would discourage anybody from providing this, or if you do. intentionally add a digit or enter it backwards, so if they are screwing around, it will make the data useless to them.
