Two weeks after USPS raised rates and instituted new "nonstandard fees" (surcharges), sellers continue to ask why eBay shipping labels appear to be overcharging them by $4.
eBay sellers used to count on the simplicity of USPS rates compared to FedEx and UPS, which had various types of surcharges that often caught small sellers by surprise - after they had already shipped their packages.
But the USPS has been instituting structural rate changes that bring it closer to its rivals, such as expanding dimensional weight pricing in 2019; adding surcharges ("nonstandard fees") on items like movie posters and golf clubs in 2022; and adding additional types of nonstandard fees this month.
Another seller replied, "Sounds like you checked irregular packages for a padded mailer when you didn't need to" and shared a screenshot of the "Package Type" settings where sellers had the option to select "Standard box, envelope, or polybag," or "Irregular packages" of various types.
The original poster said that seemed to be the issue but appeared to be upset since they never checked a box for irregular packages.
One seller pointed to
another thread on the eBay discussion boards that shipping guru Wastingtime101 posted a few days after the new USPS surcharges took effect. The post starts out, "I'm seeing posts from sellers confused about why their shipping costs are $4 higher on USPS services than they're expecting. The answer is you have "irregular package" selected on the listing form / shipping label page and the nonstandard packing surcharge is being applied."
Wastingtime101 also pointed to a trap that some sellers may be falling into:
"Sellers: be extra careful when you "sell one like this" from another seller's listing. You should always be verifying all details, especially package weight, dimensions, and whether "irregular" is checked."
