USPS Adds Local XChange Lockers for Safer Selling

New USPS Local Xchange Lockers offer buyers and sellers a way to exchange goods they've sold or traded on local selling platforms like eBay or Facebook Marketplace without the need to meet in person.

Sellers must pay a fee of $5.10 per transaction, which could be a barrier for those otherwise tempted to use them. Items must fit inside the USPS smart lockers - the maximum compartment size is 22.5" x 19.5" x 14.5", and some Smart Locker kiosks are smaller.

The new Local XChange Lockers utilize Smart Lockers the Postal Service announced in October as part of its initiative to modernize retail lobbies. At the time, USPS said 700 post offices offered Smart Lockers.

In order to use Local XChange Lockers, items must be packaged in a box or polybag and meet applicable USPS mailing requirements, including no fireworks and no mercury. The following items are also prohibited: live animals, alcohol, cremated remains, and hazardous materials other than small, mailable lithium batteries contained in electronic devices.

Sellers must have a free USPS.com account and use a Smart Locker kiosk located within 50 miles of their return address. The buyer must provide their name and valid email address to the seller so they can get their Pickup QR Code(R).

Buyers have 5 calendar days to retrieve the package from the locker before it is moved to the retail counter for an additional 10-day pickup window.

USPS said, "We are excited about the safety, security, and convenience that USPS Local XChange will bring to customers using online marketplaces and local exchange platforms," and described the benefits for sellers and buyers as follows:

Benefits for Seller:
- Convenience: Easily find lockers near you and drop off packages anytime.
- No Printer Required: Use the QR Code directly from your phone.
- Secure Transactions: Packages are stored safely until picked up.
- Professional Experience: Buyers receive timely notifications and confidence in the exchange.

Benefits for Buyers:
- Flexible Pickup: Collect your item at a time that works for you.
- Secure Storage: Packages remain safe until you arrive.
- Streamlined Process: No need to coordinate in-person with the seller.
- Peace of Mind: Automatic notifications ensure transparency and trust.

More information is available on the USPS website. Would you use USPS lockers as a seller (or buyer)?

Just charge reasonable rates, cut Ebay off from labels, pick up mail every day instead of 2 - 3 days after leaving the Post Office, sort and deliver on time that's all we ask and need. Oh yeah, and complete the scans accurately and above all else - stop lying.
