PayPal Rep No Help on DigiCert Root Certificates

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
Today I received an e-mail from PayPal referencing updates on my account. There were two main bullet-points, one of which was written in technical computer jargon. There was a link to a site called digicert, with a ton more computer jargon.

It's talking about "DigiCert Global Root G2 Chain" (whatever that is), but gives no explanation in plain English. I called PayPal to try to get it explained. Clearly the agent did not know any better than I did, but rather than find out, he refused to assist by claiming that PayPal did not send the e-mail.

This is an old trick of PayPal's when they do not want to assist a customer. "We didn't send it, ignore it, it's fine." Only months later when it becomes a problem, it's "Gotcha! We did notify you by e-mail!"

I brought up an example of this with the agent today. It was quite a few months ago when I received an e-mail from PayPal saying that a charity payment I processed through them could not be delivered to the non-profit War Child as I intended. As is within their terms, they said I had a specified amount of time to designate an alternate charity of my choice.

I called PayPal at that time and (just like today), they denied having sent the e-mail. They said the donation was processed to War Child without issue. This seemed unusual to me, so I reached out to the charity directly. They confirmed that they had not received the donation, but unfortunately, by the time they did, it was too late for me to designate a different charity, so I guess PayPal did what THEY wanted with MY money. Needless to say, that was the last time I used the eBay For Charity program.

I brought this up with the agent today, and he said he was not looking at that case. So, I told him the obvious: look at it then! Of course, he refused to do so.

Now, they are playing the same game with today's techno-babble e-mail. Is the e-mail relevant to me? Perhaps not. But if it is, you can bet on PayPal shoving in my face the fact that they did inform me about it (and, of course, they will conveniently have no record that they ever denied that fact).

Received the same e-mail and like you, have no idea what ''DigiCert Global Root G2 Chain'' is.

If it becomes an issue in the near future, I will discuss it with my eCommerce site hosting company.

Should it become an unsolvable issue and PayPal initiated credit card payments are declined, I have a backup provider that will automatically kick in.

It's been many years since a buyer has paid me with a PayPal payment.

@T:

Some additional information:

As platforms such as Bigcommerce and Shopify typically manage site certificates for smaller merchants who do not own their own certificates, doubt this will be an issue for anyone not hosting their own eCommerce site.

Anyone selling items on site’s such as Bonanza, eBay, Etsy, Mercari, and Poshmark will also be unaffected because venues such as these own the shopping carts, manage payment processing, and own site certificates.

On the other hand, if the operating system on your computer is older than Windows 7, or you are using a Linux distribution that is older than 2014, you might have an issue because outdated operating systems no longer receive security updates.

If your Internet browser is current and you are receiving updates for it, you will likely experience no issues resulting from an expired root certificate.

The following site page explains it all in plain English.

This is becoming more critical with eBay no longer acceptig AmEx cards & suggesting payments be made through payPal, which means you can set up ypur PayPal account to use AmEx to pay for the transferred invoice from eBay.

“ I called PayPal to try to get it explained. Clearly the agent did not know any better than I did…”

Imagine that.  An internal company ‘spokesperson’ who knows nothing of the most recent elements critical to customer based operations and yet is placed in the position of communicating with customers on behalf of the company.

Thought PP wasn’t “an eBay company” any more.

Seems like that domain money should go to your state's unclaimed funds bureau? I wonder...

Other spoof emails claiming to be from PayPal have been received, but not that one. If the payment or invoice cannot be found when logged into PayPal, it is fake. Fake PayPal invoices started appearing on PayPal, but soon after seeing and reporting the first one, PayPal started proactively flagging and deleting them. Logging into "PayPal" from a link in an email could result in the loss of funds.

I never click a link from an email from PayPal. If there is a problem I will see it when I log on.
Anyone who clicks a link from an email where you have to log on is a fool.
