The original poster who said they'd been selling on eBay for 25 years said, "I sell antiques and collectibles and know what price I paid for them and what they sell for. We already have to almost give the item away in order to make a sale."
Another seller pushed back, but was also sympathetic to the poster:
"What we have to keep in mind is that that there are TONS of sellers who do have their items ridiculously overpriced. I don't mean the freakshow ones like $10k for a paperclip or whatever, just items priced unrealistically high because the seller isn't great at researching comps or whatever. And eBay just keeps relisting those things, hosting them for free, so if the sellers never drop the prices, eBay will never cash in on platforming them.
"This is why they have always given all kinds of nudges to sell cheaper.
"Now they're even trying to use AI to do comp research for us, and it's hilarious, but there's no reason to take it personally, just laugh it off."
An EcommerceBytes reader shared the email eBay sent them this week with the subject line: "This one hasn't sold yet? Let's update (Listing title redacted)" that suggested the seller tweak one of their listings that hadn't sold in 90 days. The body of the email stated:
No sale in 90 days. What's next?
At this point, we recommend making some tweaks to your listing to help it sell. Tap the + next to your item to learn what helped similar listings sell.

"This is the 3rd nag I have received on my items from eBay in 3 weeks and my prices on my items are almost always cheaper than the same item listed by other Sellers, including fair shipping," the reader said. "I have turned the emails off in my preferences for these kinds of emails and eBay refuses to honor turning this feature off. eBay is no longer a venue, it is now trying to interfere with sellers listings."
The reader also believes eBay actions send the wrong message to buyers that they can "hold out until the price drops" and called it interference by eBay.
Sellers have been complaining about eBay "nagging" them to lower prices for years. In 2019, for example,
a seller posted about them, starting their post with, "You've heard of the phrase, "too much government"? Well... Too much eBay! Stop telling me to lower my price."
And in 2021,
a seller wrote a post beginning with, "I have listed for 24 years now - and this last couple of years have been a disaster with selling. Many times (and my prices are probably the lowest of anyone) I list an item and it does not sell - so eBay tells me to reduce it by 1.00 or 2.00 or 3.00 or even 5.00. I do this many times over. Then I don't sell it the second time so they ask me to reduce it again and again - I may as well put it in the trash ... yes shipping fees are very high in the entire world now - but if I have to sell an item for $5.00 and shipping is $20.00 nobody will buy it because of the shipping charges."
We don't know if eBay is increasing the frequency of such emails to sellers, and if it's now using AI to try to be "smarter" about who it targets and the advice offered in the emails. Tell us if you are seeing an increase in such emails; if they're helpful; and if you're able to turn them off if they are not helpful.
