AI Solves Facebook Marketplace Sellers' Pet Peeve

Facebook Marketplace is adding new AI tools to make it faster to sell and to respond to buyers. It's also using AI from Meta (Facebook's parent company) to summarize sellers' listing history; the type of items they sell; and their ratings at the top of their Marketplace profile.

It's apparent that Facebook Marketplace is familiar with one of sellers' pet peeves - when buyers ask if their item is still available. In its announcement in a section titled, "Yes It's Available," it explains how AI can help, advising sellers to turn on auto replies:

"Responding to buyer inquiries is now effortless with AI auto replies. When buyers ask about item availability, you can use Meta AI to draft and send an auto reply using information from your listing like a description, availability, pickup location, and price. You can enable, preview, and edit these auto replies during listing creation, making communication faster and more reliable."

Another feature lets sellers upload item images and have Meta AI automatically create a draft listing with details - "and even suggesting a price based on similar items listed in your area." It also promised simplified shipping: "generate prepaid shipping labels in just a few clicks and use the dashboard to keep track of every shipped order in one place."

It also promised greater transparency, writing: "At the top of your Marketplace profile, buyers will now see an overview of your Facebook profile, including how long you’ve been on Facebook and your number of friends, as well as a brief summary of your Marketplace activity like your listing history, the types of items you sell, and your seller ratings."

Facebook Marketplace has over 3.5 million listings posted every day in the US and Canada - read the full March 12th post in the Meta newsroom.

Don't need any worthless A.I.!

I store my Facebook items within a third party desktop software app intended for listing on eBay, which has spellchecking.

I then use a AppleScript to export the title from the app to the clipboard for pasting into Facebook Marketplace's listing form.

I use another series of AppleScripts to export the item's description plus my Facebook TOS to the clipboard for pasting into the listing form. These TOS statements are slightly different depending on if shipping is offered or if I am selling a group of items or a single item. The terms are extracted from a series of plain text files on the hard drive and added to the bottom of the description and then placed on the computer's clipboard via these AppleScripts.

Thus I can export the title or description & terms with just a double click of the mouse.

Each item receives a SKU number which is tied to a folder containing the item images. I have another AppleScript which will open this folder automatically base don the SKU thus accessing the original images is just a double click away.

Anyone sending the default message about the item being available is ignored, which is stated in my terms.

Items must be paid for via cash via buyer pickup ay my house.

Select items can be shipped with payment via Zelle only. No way I would accept Facebook payments as I am not interested in giving away free merchandise and shipping to scammers.
