eBay Cancels Order after Seller Ships $600 Item

Dear Ina,
A while back I sold a $600 lens on eBay. eBay said they had the funds and I printed the shipping label and sent the lens to Florida the same day. Then they said that the order was cancelled. I had already sent the box to the buyer.

I called "customer service" and was connected to someone who couldn't really speak English name Steve of all things. He said that I needed to talk to his supervisor.

After speaking to about five supervisors I got back to Steve as though he was the next up the chain. When I brought this up to him, he laughed at me and hung up. Eventually I got hold of someone who couldn't speak English in the states and she said there was nothing she could do.

Turns out took a check as payment from the buyer and found out it was a bad check. They told me to contact UPS. There was nothing a shipping company could do and I'm sure she knew that.

eBay dropped the ball and I'm out $600. Why and how often does this happen? Why would eBay take a check as payment and send me the shipping address? Been with them since 1999. If they were still with PayPal I would have gotten my money back, but since eBay now does that job, guess there is no recourse and you can't sue eBay in small claims court.

Thank you for your time.
D.

Something is missing here. Who paid by check and who received the check? Why did you ship it if you did not receive the funds?  Don't rely on emails, check your account to see if the funds are there.

"There was nothing a shipping company could do and I'm sure she knew that."

If the item has not been delivered yet then you can have UPS recall the item and send it back to you. In the case of USPS you may also need to call the post office through which the item will be relayed to the buyer as they even possible have it recalled when it already in the hands of the mailer deliver but not yet delivered. They will likely charge for this.

Back in the day I had a couple customers cancel their PayPal payment after they got their tracking number. So I called the carriers and they sent the items back. At this time they did not charge for recalling the package and sending it back. I was only out the initial shipping. Both eBay and PayPal denied this was technically possible and / or did the usual good cop and bad cop routine of blaming each.

The number one rule on eBay is not to believe ANYTHING eBay tells you. In most instances you are dealing with people working in a India call center who make $2.30 +/- an hour and have no authority to do anything. The so called "supervisor" is someone in another cubical. I've been in a chat session in one account and while this rep said they were working on the issue they were talking to me in another chat session in another browser.

eBay intentionally makes it difficult to get anything done as they hope you will simply accept what has happen due to the time and effort you must waste attempting to do anything. eBay wants sheep to be led to slaughter.

eBay does not give crap about you at all. I also sold on eBay since 1999 and then one day they suddenly demanded receipts for all items listed and / or sold in the last 60 days as if I was some kind of thief. I told them where they could stick that request and no longer sell on eBay. eBay management and employees are 100% sociopaths and compulsive liars. eBay management only cares about their eBay stock Ponzi scheme and cashing out their stock when they retire at any cost.

Some of these people working in a second or third world call center like to get their kicks out of having power over you as a ego trip as that is most likely all they will ever accomplish in life due to their circumstances.

eBay customer service will put you on hold; transfer you; tell you they will call you or email you in 24, 48 or 72 hour; ban you from using their live chat and / or phone chat and a host of other actions.

"bad check"

Even if the check is legit the owner of the account can have the bank perform a stop payment on the check for a fee. So paying a $30 fee would be no problem if you are stealing a $600 item plus shipping.

USPS postal money orders can be reversed by USPS for up to 2 years after they were issued. USPS also maintains a list of stolen money orders.

As DTSM said you should never reply on anything that pops up in your email account as these could be fake.

India, where eBay maintains at least one call center, has an entire industry of fake call centers impersonating various corporations in the hope of stealing funds from you. Search on Youtube for "call center hackers" for some videos of revenge videos on these criminals.

What is the seller’s process for occasions if (when) a buyer ‘cancels’ after shipping, that they can enact to mitigate or overcome any financial loss?

Wait….don’t have one?   Since ‘99??  You been lucky lucky.

Suggest you get one, and that it not include any reliance on eBay to help.   Experience should have taught you THAT lesson too by now.
