How Did the USPS Perform during Peak Season?

Did your packages arrive in time for your customers to put under their Christmas tree? Last year, USPS didn't meet five of its six service targets during peak season, according to the Postal Service's Office of Inspector General in a report published in July. Now the USPS OIG is collecting data so it can perform its postmortem on this year's peak-season performance.

The USPS's busiest week kicked off on December 15, and as in previous years, it had to contend with bad weather in many parts of the country. Despite the known delays that happen every year, the USPS recommended send-by dates for packages to arrive before December 25th this year were narrow - for example, USPS recommended people send Ground Advantage packages by December 17. If you use the Postal Service to fulfill holiday orders, do you think that guidance is realistic?

Problems don't necessarily end on December 25th. The Inspector General noted in its July report on last year's postal performance that the Postal Service experiences a high volume after peak season due to returns.

The OIG began this year's project on measuring service performance during the 2026 Peak Mailing Season on December 11th and expects to publish its report in April:

"Every year during the Postal Service's peak mailing season, increased mail package volume significantly strains the Postal Service's processing, logistics, and delivery network. To help handle this strain, the Postal Service creates preparedness plans with peak season initiatives. These initiatives are intended to help the Postal Service have the right amount of personnel, resources, and capacity throughout its network. Our objective is to evaluate the Postal Service’s performance during the fiscal year 2026 peak and post-peak seasons, the implementation of its peak season preparedness plans, and operational changes to the network potentially impacting performance."

It welcomed anyone to provide "information or input that might be beneficial to the auditors on this topic" by using a webform to contact it.

Did you detect any patterns with your USPS packages this peak season, such as one service performing better than others (for example, Ground Advantage vs Priority Mail), or if there were any types of packages that got hung up more than others? If your packages sailed to customers' homes like presents on Santa's sleigh, let us know; if you encountered problems, please share those experiences in the comments as well.

Not bad. Pretty good, actually. Many of my packages are delivered via UPS or FedEx. Those outfits did well, too. Out here in Oregon we had few days of extreme weather. I feel sorry for the postal workers who were trying to keep up in the midwest & east coast.

In 26 years one lost package via USPS. Stolen by a USPS employee or contractor or it was actually delivered and buyer simply claimed it never arrived as USPS never updated the tracking information after the second sorting center.

One customer paid via dollar coins taped to a piece of typing paper and that was stolen from the envelope and arrived in a damaged mail poly bag. The thief was good - steamed open the envelope, removed the coins, stuck the tape back down and resealed the envelope with no tears anywhere. At least they teach them something at USPS.

One late package what diverted to another state for some reason, but arrived safely.

UPS stabbed one package with a forklift.

A better question is why much of the staff of the Office of Inspector General and higher USPS management are not fired and loose their benefits and pensions for other reasons. They also be banned from ever holding a job with the federal government as well as working as government contractor.

1. Anyone you agreed to the 2010 USPS, China Post and eBay deal to create cobranded shipping labels for eBay's Chinese vendors. This cost USPS billions in loses.

2. Anyone behind the USPS program to buy the homes of upper management forced to move due to a job change, with USPS later losing millions when selling these homes.

3. Stop wasting millions on running digital, video and print ads. As a seller and buyer I do not care about these ads. None of my customers care about these ads. Anyone not connected with online selling or buying does not care about these ads. What they care about is lowered costs versus the complete fantasy USPS displays in these ads.

4. Massive misuse of Priority and Express mail supplies has costs USPS many millions of dollars yet they introduce a lowered priced service with insurance called Ground Advantage and provide supplies for that all.

They could care less about when you report people.

Supplies should come with a minimum fee so at least you get reimbursed for the supplies.

I got an Amazon order for a book on November 26, late in the day after the post office closed. The next day, Thursday, was Thanksgiving. I shipped it Ground Advantage first thing Friday morning. I recommended expedited shipping if it was needed soon. The buyer chose standard shipping. About 30 days later the book had not been delivered. The buyer asked for a full refund, which I immediately gave. The buyer also gave me a 1 star rating, a negative. I had been selling books on Amazon for over 20 years. I've always wondered why Amazon doesn't have a two step feedback system. The buyer gets to leave feedback for the seller, and feedback for the carrier (USPS, etc). Amazon has never cared about their marketplace sellers or they would have done something years ago about angry buyers punishing the seller for poor performance from the post office.

I use USPS Ground Advantage and I felt that USPS did a wonderful job this year. I didn't have a single package late or stuck in a distribution facility. I did have one customer worry about the unusual route a package was taking but it ended up arriving on time. Very grateful for a headache-free holiday season this year!

USPS has performed extremely well for me as it usually does.
