Did your packages arrive in time for your customers to put under their Christmas tree? Last year, USPS didn't meet five of its six service targets during peak season, according to the Postal Service's Office of Inspector General in a report published in July. Now the USPS OIG is collecting data so it can perform its postmortem on this year's peak-season performance.
The USPS's busiest week kicked off on December 15, and as in previous years, it had to contend with bad weather in many parts of the country. Despite the known delays that happen every year, the USPS recommended send-by dates for packages to arrive before December 25th this year were narrow - for example, USPS recommended people send Ground Advantage packages by December 17. If you use the Postal Service to fulfill holiday orders, do you think that guidance is realistic?
Problems don't necessarily end on December 25th. The Inspector General noted in its July report on last year's postal performance that the Postal Service experiences a high volume after peak season due to returns.
"Every year during the Postal Service's peak mailing season, increased mail package volume significantly strains the Postal Service's processing, logistics, and delivery network. To help handle this strain, the Postal Service creates preparedness plans with peak season initiatives. These initiatives are intended to help the Postal Service have the right amount of personnel, resources, and capacity throughout its network. Our objective is to evaluate the Postal Service’s performance during the fiscal year 2026 peak and post-peak seasons, the implementation of its peak season preparedness plans, and operational changes to the network potentially impacting performance."
It welcomed anyone to provide "information or input that might be beneficial to the auditors on this topic" by using a webform to contact it.
Did you detect any patterns with your USPS packages this peak season, such as one service performing better than others (for example, Ground Advantage vs Priority Mail), or if there were any types of packages that got hung up more than others? If your packages sailed to customers' homes like presents on Santa's sleigh, let us know; if you encountered problems, please share those experiences in the comments as well. |
