USPS to Ask Congress to Approve Drastic Measures

By: Ina Steiner

USPS Postmaster General David Steiner will ask Congress to approve drastic measures in a hearing on Tuesday, according to Reuters (via Yahoo News), which reported: "Steiner laid out potential options to cut costs: ending six-day-a-week deliveries, closing post offices or raising first-class mail stamp prices to $1 or more, up from the current $0.78."

But raising the price of a stamp could accelerate the decline in volume of letter mail, its most profitable product - has seen massive declines, as the GAO reported in December.

The alternative to taking drastic measures: the end of the Postal Service as we know it. Reuters quoted the PMG's written testimony to be delivered tomorrow, including the following excerpt:

"In order to ensure our survival beyond next year, we need to increase our borrowing capacity so that ‌we don't run out of cash," Steiner's written testimony seen by Reuters said. "The failure to do this could lead to the end of the Postal Service as we know it now."

Many sellers rely on USPS Ground Advantage for shipping their orders, which is a competitive service as opposed to a market dominant service like letter mail. But presumably moving to a 5-day delivery schedule would impact package delivery as well as letter mail.

Stop wasting millions on advertising on TV and print ads!

Stop selling forever stamps. It ends up cost you revenue in the long run. Forever stamp resellers buy large lots of these stamps, hang on to them for years, and then sell at a profit at a price point lower at the current forever price rates.

Stop giving away free supplies which are horrible abused. Charge a minimum fee per box and envelope.

Which USPS members of management agreed to eBay's 2010 trilateral agreement between China Post, eBay and USPS, which cost USPS billions in loses? They need to be fired, loose all retirement benefits and be banned form ever holding a job with federal government.

Same goes to managers who created the program to buy the homes of executives forced to move due to the job change, with USPS losing millions on these homes.

More revenue at the post office via a national lottery similar to PowerBall, witch ticket sold through post offices. A private company actually handles the lottery, with post office doing the sales, which include automated vending machines for tickets.

Follow general account principles which state to match revenue to expenses. The local post office never got any credit for all the shipping labels I purchased for the last 27 years, yet if that post office was not open I would not be selling anything online at all as I am not making multiple trips per week to another town. Only the local post office's sales of stamps and postal meters is counted as revenue.

How about going to business school?  You have declining demand for your product...so you raise prices.  THAT ought to fix everything, right?  That's not how any of us operate our businesses...

5 day a week delivery will be fine. that should save the usps a lot of money.

I guess if they go to 5 days a week, that means on holidays it would be three days without mail, right?

Only a Dollar?

In April UK's Royal Mail are raising the price of a first class stamp to £1.80

Oh for the good old days when you could make money selling empty boxes. Cheap to post because of their light weight. Then in came size limits, price rises and more price rises.

5 day per week delivery sounds sensible but would likely create problems. Such as:

More mail piles up between delivery days; slower overall delivery times (especially for First-Class Mail); increased strain on the remaining 5 days, possibly causing bottlenecks.  Mail already arrives later and less frequently--losing a day could mean long gaps (e.g., Fri → Mon becomes Thu → Mon)

Moreover, private carriers like UPS and FedEx often rely on USPS for “last-mile” delivery in these areas, so disruptions could cascade

Small businesses depend on USPS for affordable shipping therefore slower delivery could hurt competitiveness vs. Amazon and big retailers Sellers on platforms like Etsy or eBay would surely face customer complaints.

With USPS raising rates several times per year, and implementing long periods of surge pricing during the holidays, I fear that they are pricing themselves out of business.

Deliver mail 3 days a week, with neighboring zip codes pairing up, so one gets mail M-W-F, the other Tu-Th-Sa. Package delivery stays on 6 days a week. Stop Amazon Sunday package delivery.

Its letter mail that is costing too much time and money. If you need mail, sign up for online bill payments. With 3 day letter delivery, we can cut the number of drivers.

So how exactly would seniors (and others) get their mail order medications in a timely means?  Magic wand? Three days a week is hardly what I would call service.  There would be such a backlog of packages that it would completely shut down facilities.

By chance o you sell on eBay?  LOL   What a nightmare it would be to deal with the "where is my package" customers with three days per week deliveries.

Pretty simple fix to get in the black. Let USPS invest its retirement funds that are around $250 billion in TSP just like USPS employees do. At a low 4 to 5% avg gain you are talking $10 billion plus avg gains each year. Second, cut management. The supervisor/manager ratio to city carrier is 1 to every 7.4 city carriers. Management at USPS headqrts has increased nearly 40% since 2020, why? Another cut there. How about offer early retirement offer? That would easily save hundreds of millions a year to start. That is just a couple things quickly that can be done. Also, if USPS is losing money how does their cash available last qrt when they already hit their borrowing limit in 2024. At end of dec 31st 2025, all types of cash on hand was $14.319 billion up from $13.335 fro, start of the quarter. https://about.usps.com/what/financials/financial-conditions-results-re

not to mention Congress give back the overpayment usps has made to civil service retirement fund. Google the Segal usps report, you are talking over $85 billion to $100 billion
