Dear Ina,
Reuters Special Report: "Meta is earning a fortune on a deluge of fraudulent ads, documents show"

Wow. And at the same time, Meta has abysmal support for sellers on FB Marketplace.

I've seen fraudulent ads in my feed. A couple of years ago, there were dozens of fake ads claiming to be from Etsy; it was easy enough to determine they had NOTHING to do with Etsy.

There is STILL a fraudulent listing coming up in my Marketplace feed. It's a house for rent with the address being a local high school! I've reported this listing a couple of times, but FB apparently doesn't see a need to remove it. SMH!

fortunately, i have an inherent distate of paying for or responding to any ads on these marketplaces.

in a slightly tangential issue, I see ads every day from roofers, painters, pool repairs etc from waaay outside my locale....doesnt sound like FB is interested in correcting this or highlighting a 'geography' for the ad purchaser to choose from

Yes, I see a LOT of ads for businesses and events that are 2000 miles away! It doesn't make any sense to show ads to people who are unlikely to visit that area or need that business' services.

@Sierra- and the person paying for the AD, will NEVER know......sometimes i send them a courtesy dm, esp if they actually do state their locale...

I've done that too. I've also DM'd if it's something that catches my attention but there's no location visible ... so I *have* to click on the ad. When I do contact the advertiser, I mention the possibility of targeting their ad (I've been able to do that the few times that I've run FB ads but that's been several years ago  now so I don't know if it's still an option).

i'm pretty sure it is an option, but the ad purchaser probably spent a month or so on useless ads to most likely some HIGH end ad geography and timings, before they find out.
you may think that is not a lot of $, but as Jeff B says 'i can collect a few cents from every household in the USA, every day and be the most useless (uh, sorry, i mean rich) man on earth

some of the last people on earth I would pay to blindly pick out of a grab bag of unknowns...bad enough i had to pay FVFs and get 'mediation' from a teen in a locale who thinks we all eat McD and KFC 3 meals a day every day...       :.D
