eBay Canada and Kijiji Vie for Unwanted Christmas Presents

eBay Canada and eBay's Canadian classifieds site Kijiji are both appealing to consumers to sell their unwanted holiday gifts on their respective sites, citing research that showed up to 8.6 million gifts were "likely unwanted" over the holiday season.
Research commissioned by eBay's classifieds site Kijiji.ca shows 40 percent of Canadians likely received at least one gift they can't use or don't like during the holiday season, and nearly 50 percent of Canadians admitted that they stored unwanted holiday gifts, mostly out of guilt and shame. Two-in-10 Canadians admit they hold on to some of these unwanted gifts for more than five years, and almost one-in-10 Canadians said they kept unwanted items forever.
Less than one-in-10 Canadians would consider turning the unwanted item into cash, according to the research conducted by Ipsos Reid, which polled 1,008 adults between December 20 to 21, 2010. A very small percentage of survey respondents reported having been caught by the gift-giver getting rid of the item. According to the survey, some of the worst holiday gifts received included:
- an already opened fruit basket;
- a broom and dustpan;
- soap on a rope;
- a used diary.
eBay Canada also commissioned research, by TNS Ncompass Online Omnibus, which surveyed 1079 adults between September 30 and October 4, 2010. The research revealed that nearly 30 percent of Canadians expected to incur some form of shortfall due to holiday splurging.
However, 75 percent of Canadians don't plan to sell their unwanted holiday gifts.
eBay Canada advised, "discreetly selling the item on eBay.ca may be the easiest way to spare both the gift-giver's feelings and your closet space."
