eBay is adding optional warranties in seller listings in the home and garden category. Shoppers can find links to SquareTrade warranties in small and large appliances including microwaves, coffee makers, refrigerators and dishwashers.

Sellers have nothing to do with the warranty, as eBay explained in its announcement. "We're giving buyers just one more reason to choose eBay - and you - for all of their home and garden needs. You don't need to do a thing. The optional SquareTrade warranty will be automatically offered on eligible Home and Garden items - list today."

The new optional SquareTrade warranty covers new or used electrical appliance purchases from mechanical and electrical failure, plus offers added protection against accidents and normal malfunctions with the Accidental Damage from Handling (ADH) coverage.

SquareTrade CEO Steve Abernethy said eBay already offers SquareTrade on almost every consumer electronics category. "This announcement is just that we are now also available on home & garden items - which until now, it wasn't offered directly."

Abernethy said, "SquareTrade has already protected over a million eBay items," and said the company provides a 5-day service guarantee and - "either fix your item or refund your item price. This is already in place in most other consumer electronics items as a way to give new options to consumers to protect their purchases."

SquareTrade also offers warranties to consumers directly through its own website, wherever the item was purchased. The company has a long relationship of working with eBay, and SquareTrade once powered a feature called Mutual Feedback Withdrawal that allowed eBay buyers and sellers to go through a dispute-resolution process and mutually agree to remove feedback.
