eBay Sellers Running a Business with No Access to Their Funds

Dear Ina,
I emailed you before and told you that I felt like you are the voice of sellers. Well I need that voice lol.

eBay's payouts are jacked up. I read about this last night on Reddit and the OP of that post got poo-poo'd as it being a problem with his bank. But then a couple others chimed in and said well no my payouts are not being deposited either. And I thought, uh oh, here we go again.

I had 2 weekend deposits that were supposed to hit about 9 pm Monday night (that is the usual time frame). They did not. I called my bank this morning (Tuesday) and they said that not only do they have no record of those 2 pending weekend deposits, they also have no record of a pending deposit for Monday (put a pin in this).

They also said that eBay's "bank reference number" that eBay attaches to their payouts on the seller hub is a meaningless number. What I need for my bank to resolve it is the 15 digit ACH trace number, which of course eBay does not provide.

I called eBay and of course got their third world "helpline" and they did transfer me over to managed payments and this is what he told me:

We know there is a problem. It's affecting a lot of sellers. We are working on fixing it. We don't know when it will be fixed, and we don't know when you will have your money.

I'm about to make post at reddit putting them on blast because I KNOW they read there but then I thought nope, I'm gonna email Ina.

The unhelpful guy on the phone from eBay told me that "it's just the payouts from this weekend that are affected" well no I call bullshit on that. My payout that went out Monday night/Tuesday morning? Well my bank said they would have a record on their end of a pending ACH for tonight, and they do not.

Then he told me "it's being fixed right now" but had no timeline whatsoever of how long before I get my money. I pointed out that these two statements contradict each other, and he had nothing to say to that.

So I guess I'm going to sit here with no money trying to run a business. This doesn't happen anywhere else. It doesn't happen with Poshmark, Mercari, etc. It just happens with the people who have been in business the longest and should know how to get us paid without screwing us all up!!!

Thank you for being there, Ina Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope of getting an actual straight answer.

Note from the editor: eBay's System Status board shows green (all working) for Payouts, and while its Tech Issues thread is showing a problem with payouts, it has not communicated with sellers on the Seller Announcement Board, though an eBay moderator responded in a thread about the "known issue" (glitch). The problem has been reported on the Ecommerce EKG board. Some sellers reported eBay customer service initially blamed sellers' banks for the problem.

I'm receiving lots of emails about this "glitch" including one from a reader who said they were extremely angry and ended their letter, "Keep me anonymous - I was already so rude on the phone!" (Understandably so)

@GetAGrip Do a comparison between eBay and the Dow/S&P/Nasdaq. Over the last year, two years, and five years, eBay is down by considerably more than all three of the main indices. Yes, the past year has been bad for the market in general, but by comparison, eBay is doing much worse than the broader market.

I don't think being rude on the phone with a CSR is the answer to anything. They didn't create the problem nor can they resolve the problem. I get it that many sellers are upset and I think they are justified in that. Messing with someone's money is a huge issue and is always taken personally, so tempers tend to flair.

IDK what caused the problem or what it will take to fix it. I do fear that because this is Ebay Open week that available staff to fix the issue may be low and cause a delay in the fix. That i NOT a defense of Ebay in any way. I say pull back whomever you need to for Ebay Open and get the problem fixed ASAP if not sooner.

I hope this works out for everyone very very soon.

This has now been posted by Ebay.

"Some sellers may have experienced an issue with their payouts. This has been resolved and all affected payouts have been initiated. Depending on your bank, these payouts should be cleared and become available to you in the next 1-4 business days. We apologize for any inconvenience."

So the problem has been resolved and everyone should see their deposits shortly. Very good news indeed.

Fixing a glitch is the least they can do. But it is not the same as fixing the ‘problem’. They band-aided a disease.

Immediate redirection of blame. Lack of communication - externally AND internally. And what was all that money doing - where was it - while it was being ‘delayed’ by yet another ‘technical’ issue with eBay’s touted IT consortium? That would be ‘interesting’ to learn, no?

All better now, nothing to see here folks. Move along. Just another day on the Bay, right?

What I'm saying is:
By virtue of the fact it's EBAY, and there is a professional code of conduct for online eCommerce, THERE IS NO EXCUSE for Ebay to be sleezey.
Ebay actually makes a Bad Name for eCommerce to the point the REST of us should sue them.

But no one made any excuse for Ebay on this subject. It is clearly Ebay's fault. What caused the problem, I have no idea and I'm not willing to assume something. Even Ebay said it was their issue.

No other place on the internet is irresponsible as Ebay is.

OH DANG!!!! I am so sorry!! SINCERELY and DEEPLY I mean that!!! That is beyond difficult to deal with. I wish you nothing but the best.

AS to Ebay, I know that is your opinion, you have been very clear on that. On this thread, this subject, no one has said they weren't responsible. So we are all in agreement, this issue was all on Ebay.
