Is eBay a Reliable Price Guide for Vintage Goods?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
Is anyone else 'mind-boggled' at some of the prices that sellers are trying to get for their items?

I am researching the values of my old '50s, '60s and '70s 45 rpm records and someone has listed The Miracles' 'You've Really Got a Hold On Me' for....$1,373.99!!!! And that is reduced from...$5,495.95!! With a shipping cost of $24.95...oh, but it's Expedited!

Other listings for the same record are from 99 cents to $125!!

I guess, at these prices, I will be rich in no time!
Bruce

What a seller is asking has nothing to do with what an item is actually likely to sell for.  That's not unique to eBay.  What I do have a major issue with is eBay displaying unpaid items as completed sales, and showing items having sold at a particular price (without even being crossed out, like some best offer prices are), when the item actually sold at a lower price.  The unpaid issue is not new, but years ago, when an item sold as a best offer, the best offer price would be shown.

Once upon a time….

Before eBay paved over it’s paradise with ‘enhancements’, before they manipulated visibility, before they misrepresented results to make listings ‘appear’ more financially successful, before they alienated (and continue to) whole classes and types of sellers and items less ‘favored’ - clearly less ‘understood’ by them…

the eBay marketplaceS reflected a true on-line representation of both an accurate sales expectation - typically backed by dozens of examples that could be used for attribute and condition comparison - and revealed a true picture of supply, demand, and best sales method most effective.

A few minutes searching would return accurate and similar results, without distracting ads, or a slew of completely irrelevant or undesired results to sift through.

Ergo - if one wanted to offer it via eBay, eBay’s historical data, easily, efficiently and accurately returned was the best source to use to set Price.  More often than not, at auction with minimum start bid.  A price eBay wouldn’t try to ‘compel reason’ for either.  A price usually realized, and frequently exceeded, based on an organic and vibrant market.

Then eBay threw away that successful past with their street focused machinations and NONE of the sellers of items where eBay’s historical sales data USED to be relevant and reliable lived happily ever after ever since.

The end.  Close the book on it.

Can't say reliable but they do set some prices I guess. But since ebay started the price of vintage goods has dropped, I mean before them it was hard to find certain goods and they sold for alot. with ebay, what you couldn't find before now there's a hundred for sale.
I can say when it comes to fishing lures, what I sold for $30, 10 years ago, I can't sell 2 for $8, there so many of them. I love seeing post on FB or CL or even when I go to buy something, they guy will say "their selling for this much on ebay" NOPE, don't look at the asking price, click over to sold section and see what they actually sold for. Not to say some can't sell for a ton, you find a lure that's hard to find and I've made a fortune.
I fell sorry for few older guys thinking their Heddon fishing lure collection will be their retirement plan and like a bad stock, their worthless.

When I have an item that I don't know the value of, I generally look on eBay and Amazon to get an idea of what sellers are pricing theirs at. Then I go lower.

eBay was NEVER the single go to price reference for selling vintage and antiques.  It's one reference among many.

It never has and never will be.
As I heart says you take the lowest price and then set your lower.

They used to be, brick and mortar is gaining ground and by this time two years from now, if things keep going the way they are...
So long sad times
Go long bad times
We are rid of you at last
Howdy gay times
Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past
Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again
All together shout it now
There's no one
Who can doubt it now
So let's tell the world about it now
Happy days are here again
Your cares and troubles are gone
There'll be no more from now on
From now on
Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy times, happy nights
Happy days are here again

Flea markets, yard sales, cash & Craigslist...hotdogs, soda pop and that best gal by your side....don't that  sound just nice?

The thrift stores in my area: when they get something that seems valuable, they look it up on eBay and price theirs to match the highest price someone is asking at fixed price. So it goes unsold until they start slashing the price.
Filtering by sold items, highest price first you can get a good idea how to price things. I can't think of a better price guide. Did you notice that sold auction prices are consistently less the sold fixed price listings (except for the occasional blunder by a rookie seller who just sold his $100 item for 10 bucks)?

LDWCallsOut would you mind sharing the other pricing services you use?

I currently have a subscription to Worthpoint but it is $25/mo. and the search engine features are not as good as eBay ... but still better than Amazon.
I paid up as I'm trying to liquidate an estate, but I can't justify an on-going subscription...

Terrapeak (1 year of closed auctions now owned by eBay)

is helpful...

Thanks all ... for any tips!
