Dear Ina,
I got an email that Objects Limited is shutting down. I wonder if the sale of Depop to Etsy plus the recent sale of Tradesy to Vestiaire left them unable to compete.

Object (no S) Limited is shutting down.  Objects Limited is a different business entirely.

Maybe that was a problem -- having a name too much like another site?

I had never heard of Object Limited until reading this post, which maybe is another problem they had?

***Inflation will kill small businesses***

During the U.S. financial crisis which began in 2009, Etsy went “Public” as the then CEO explained that the length of the economic downturn put so much strain on the consumer, that Etsy had no choice but to raise capital, otherwise, Etsy would have gone bankrupt. Eventually, the economy recovered and Etsy did well with a stronger consumer.

But now in 2022, we have worldwide inflation putting a strain on consumers. U.S. retail analysts have always said that the retail market was already over saturated before e-commerce. The reality...there are too many products for consumers to consume. I expect more retail shops will close if inflation indeed becomes an issue.

Here in the U.S. it’s the beginning of earnings season where retailers will report for Q1. Not only do these reports provide financial information, but they also provide information on HOW consumers are spending their money.

Having said all that, as a seller of artisan jewelry on Etsy, this quarter feels slower than last quarter. I’m sure Etsy’s wedding category is doing well, however, will that be enough to appeal to investors. Etsy may have overextended itself by buying Elo7 and Depop. ELo7 in Brazil and Depop in Brazil are seeing high inflation rates for both the UK and Brazil and will more than likely put a drag on those two markets.

Time will tell...
