eBay Seller Feels Pushed to the Limit

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
eBay's "How far can we push them?" I've been at this for a minute, longer than I can remember to be honest. It was hard to get going at first with a few failed attempts trying to get traction in the market. In the beginning it was exciting to start making a few bucks and watch it grow with hard work and determination. The more you put in the more you get back kind of thing, a little like farming.

I remember my 1st bad review that I could not turn around. I lost sleep for weeks. I've only had few over the years. But, I have had a few that was nothing more than being blackmailed. You know the game... "you let keep the item and send a partial or full refund and I will not slap you with a bad review" This (*&^ me OFF! And eBay was no help unless you found a operator that was not going to allow it to happen.

I have stories... If you sell for anytime at all you have them too. This is the stuff I learned to live with though, understanding without buyers there is no market for sellers, so I took the red pill and it was just the way it was, even if the buyer had zero feedback and a month old account.

But then sellers started getting bullied by the company, it was subtle at first, but, during Covid? The "How far can we push them?" campaign seemed to start.

No more call-in support, we lost PayPal which made life so easy. That seemed to be the Trojan horse for the rate hike. Now instead of 10 or 11 % I pay 16% and shipping and tax appears to be considered as "MY PROFIT" as well.

You can play numbers all you want to make it look like we are not being taxed by eBay on the Sales tax and shipping collected, but it still comes to 16%. I sure did  really took it personal when I knew, and heart breaking to have fails, but it makes you stronger over time.

I just can not understand why a few smart kids have not built a platform to compete with the MONSTER that we have created. Or do I secretly just like the punishment? If asked. I DO NOT. Yet I continue.
Signed,
Tied to the whipping post

Due to covid Ebay did HAVE to shut down their Call Center.  Are you suggesting they should have disregarded the directives from the Government and forced their employees to work in close quarters?  I'm pretty confident you didn't mean that.

It did take Ebay more time than I thought it should to set up people so they could securely work from home.  But apparently it was the security that took them a bit of time getting set up so the site was protected and in turn us.

With that said, there are several ways in which we can contact Ebay for help.  For some reason many members think that if they don't have a phone number they can call, there is no customer service to be had.  But that was never true.

The Social Media help groups were there even during the pandemic.  Ebay for business on Twitter or Facebook was and is available.  And that is where you will find the better trained CS people anyway.  But besides this, there the Chat function is back and there is the ability to ask for a call back.

I'm sorry that in the past you have gotten really bad advice that some of your negatives could not be removed.  If you notified Ebay and had them review the emails you got from the buyer about blackmailing you.  Once they confirmed that, the FB should have gone Poof.  IDK why they didn't do that for you.

As for the rates we pay now with Ebay as our money processor and what we paid with Paypal, they are not that different.  In most categories, sellers without a store pay 12.9% in Ebay fees plus a 30 cent per transaction fee.

When we were in PP, we paid a 2.9% fee to PP plus a 30 cent per transaction fee and about a 10% FVF to Ebay.  That equals 12.9%.

Now while the percentage works out to be the same if PP is processing the money or if Ebay is processing the money, we do pay a little more with Ebay as our money processor than with PP.  That comes in with Sales Tax.

In PP the 2.9% was charged on the Sales tax, but in Ebay it is 12.9%, so in Ebay we are paying 10% more on sales tax than we did when PP processed our money.  Other than that, the pricing is roughly the same.

Had a $24 sale with $9.95 shipping.
Fees were $4.99 ($4.69 + 30 cents)
$4.99/$24=20.8%
That's $1.90 fee for shipping and tax
That's 61% of the fee for the item ($3.09) added on.
Imagine my enthusiasm.

@Ebayout

As you are aware, Ebay does not just charge the FVF on the product price.  They have also for over eleven years charged it on shipping and since you entered MP, they charge it on sales tax.

You might want to check your math.  If 4.99 is 20.8%, 1.90 can't be 61%.  I understand you are trying to make it look as bad as you can.

@Marie

The claim is that an extra $1.90 IS a 61% added charge for the $3.09 original ITEM fee.
1.9 / 3.09 = 61.49%

The math seems clear to me.
And I understand that you are trying to make other posters comments look as bad as you can...

Just because a company practices Bad Business for 11+ years does not mean it is okay.

"Due to covid Ebay did HAVE to shut down their Call Center. Are you suggesting they should have disregarded the directives from the Government and forced their employees to work in close quarters? I'm pretty confident you didn't mean that. "

* I'm pretty confident you heard of ZOOM and working from home*

AND, since its all SCRIPT READ as ALL call centers are - your reply ....... is not consistent with reality.

YES they had to close Walkers West, YES Uncle GRIFF couldnt get into his rather LARGE corner office - but so what?

I sold goods during Covid, eBay ran as good (or bad) as it ever did. Neither the Mafia nor eBay stopped because of Covid.

eBay STILL should not be allowed to make FVF off shipping - it was a crime THEN, its a crime NOW.

Wait till the OP realizes that with out the EXTRA VIG (pay offs to the capos and leg breakers) , his/her item wont be seen ....promoted listings my you know what.

We all know what we signed up for when we listed the item for sale on eBay.

The fees are not hidden, they may be a little disguised but not hidden.

The commenters here don't need to make eBay look as bad as they can; eBay does a great job of that all by itself.

If you can't do 7th grade math, you shouldn't comment on the math skills of someone else in a public forum...much less presume their motives.

Marie,

My company had all calls to the office redirected to out personal phones, and we could sign into the computer system from home for years now. Why couldn't "The Greatest Technology Company" do the same?

Ebay's attempts to monetize the  site will work until one day it doesn't. We have been selling a pretty steady amount since 1999. Nice steady money for us and eBay. There are changes that eBay could make that would make the pie bigger for all, eBay included. Thinking up new ways to get money from sellers without creating new value is not sustainable in the long term. Rather than complaining about fees etc, we need to ask over and over where they are creating new value. If their focus is on value then we will all do well. I am sure eBay reads these posts. Maybe we need to post positive suggestions instead of just complaining about how eBay has changed or is ruining eCommerce.

@ pace
I answered your concern in the post you are quoting from.  Try the next paragraph.

I said it DID take Ebay too long IMHO to get their work from home CS up and running and I stand by that as IMHO it did take them too long.  But not much we can do about that now.

Not quite that simple when those same people need to access a site the size of Ebay with the ability to view certain account info.  It isn't as simple as answering phones, you need to or you SHOULD need to consider the safety and security of the site too.  I suppose that isn't important to some, but to most I'm pretty confident it was and is.

With that said, I'll say it again.  IMHO it took Ebay way too long to get this all worked out and have the CS able to handle calls from home.

Stop selling on this venue before the rest of your money is siphoned. Drip drip drip, until you have nothing left. They own you, its not your business... Your better off moving on. You'd be better off working for anyone but the venue. Its "your business" however, all you do is work for nothing. Heck, you may wake up one day to find you've been indefinitely suspended. Then they'll come after you for fees, etc..

"It did take Ebay more time than I thought it should to set up people so they could securely work from home. But apparently it was the security that took them a bit of time getting set up so the site was protected and in turn us."

Honestly and I mean HONESTLY - are you expecting ANYONE to "buy that" ?

eBay's main CS is overseas - it took the company they pay to maintain, set up and provide employees a SHORT time - it was eBay that fooled around and used it to eliminate "the old" inbound call flow.

NOW, its all hidden and you have to go to the HELP section and play with the "be contacted by eBay nonsense." NEVER let a crisis be a waste of opportunity huh? ESPECIALLY when its saving eBay money.

They COULD have shifted it all to home based US employees - but hey - why bother - its only sellers!?

"it was the security that took them a bit of time getting set up so the site was protected and in turn us" - WHAT ? What does that even mean ?

Im not / would not have been protected in some way (from Covid or from eBay itself??????)

What NEW security steps were needed? I worked at that time as senior management for a LARGE trucking co that did/does exactly what eBay does - outsource its CS. It took no more then a few days and a few zoom meetings .... eBay isnt the FBI - its simple names and phone numbers - theres no time that ANY CS EVER needs bank info - so again - what security ??????

Really.  You would have no problem with CS being able to work from home and accessing personal data on members with no security on their connection or computer?  Interesting.

The only E~bay ''security'' is the excessive executive payment plan @Walkers!

There are other ecommerce platforms besides Ebay. Maybe you should look at what you are selling and consider selling different things in the future. I sell vintage and use FBMP and local pick up with cash. When I found out PayPal was demonitizing people who have views that are different from the "official narrative " I decided to limit exposure to PayPal as much as possible.
