eBay Buyer Refuses Refund but Allowed to Retaliate

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
Well now I can not get anyone at eBay on the phone. Maybe if you got 20 layers deep you could contact someone - but I can't find out how???

Buyer left me a negative after wanting a discount or partial refund - which I don't do. I offered a full refund including shipping, but no - item was very bad, but they didn't want to return the item?? They left me a long negative.
Best,
M.

Go to Orders> Paid and shipped.  Find the item sold.  There is a link at each item that says ''Sell Similar''.  To the right of that is a drop down arrow with over a dozen actions that can take place from that spot.  One of them is Report Buyer.  Follow that along and document the problem.  I have had good luck with that, usually the feedback is removed if unwarranted.

If the feedback is specifically the buyer's opinion, that there was something they didn't like, it may not get removed.  EBay lets them have their opinion.  If it can't be removed, the best thing to do is solicit feedback directly from people you have sold to recently by sending a friendly message.  The more people who leave good feedback, the faster the bad feedback post moves down and gets off the first page.

You can send a direct request to the buyer to modify their feedback.  I have a blue notification box that says ''Send revision request to buyers''
''You can now request buyers to revise negative or neutral feedback from the feedback comments section.''  It doesn't say how to do it, just that you can.  Maybe another poster will know how it's done.

Also, you can leave feedback responding to the bad feedback.  To the right of the buyer's feedback, there is a Reply link.  Be careful in your wording, just clear up what is incorrect or spin it in your favor.  Don't attack the buyer - other buyers may take this as a sign that you are arrogant and won't buy from you.

Lastly, you can just let it hang there.  People realize that it is impossible to please everyone, and unless there is a pattern of negatives, will attribute it to just that.

If they mention the partial refund or that they wanted to keep the item while getting a refund from you but you would not play, That is grounds to get the FB removed.  Contact Ebay.

If there is one thing I have learned on ebay is you cannot make everyone happy.

There is someone somewhere for no particular good reason who will leave you a negative. I had one person leave me a negative after they bought their relatives photo. They did not think I should be allowed to sell it. Another left me a negative because I refused to negotiate a lower price. They bought the item then trashed my feedback.

I count on at least one showing up each year. I do not let me get bent out of shape. There will always be one I cannot make happy. One in a thousand...

We are sorry our posted full refund on return policy did not permit us to provide the partial refund you demanded to assuage your allegations of displeasure.

eBay buyers are birds of a different color.   I sell on many sites.  Very few problems on the other sites.  eBay?  My God.

I blame eBay.  They set the expectation with buyers that they will not be happy.

Yeah we've been down this road a few times.  Buyer would rather leave negative feedback than get a full refund.  I figure those folks just have some psychological problem I'd rather not deal with so they go on the banned buyer list.  Negatives just come with the territory of selling so just take them and move on.  Face the fact in retail there are 1-2% of your customers you don't need and don't want.  The sooner you identify them and eliminate them the better your life will be.

Just this week I had a buyer leave neg FB saying it would cost her more to return ''broken'' item than it was worth despite my telling her about free returns 3 times.  I called ebay and rep removed negative.  I was surprised at how easy this was.

Rexford, Spot on. We also sell on many platforms, ebay is the worst as far as buyers go. Now with the lousy economy the games and scams are in full force, other sites, no problems, ebay, good Lord buckle up. Ebay gets the bottom of the barrel as far as online buyers and they do nothing about them. Scammers paradise.

If you cannot get it removed, then add your two cents and make a comment using  words like this, "I'm sorry that you got upset becuse I would not give you a discount after you received the item. Best I could do was offer a full refund for return of item.

I've been through this scenario more times than i can count with buyers. They send a nasty email and say they aren't happy with the item. I never offer partial refunds as this is simply a way buyers have learned to extort a lower price after the sale is done by claiming it is 'not as described'.
The big key here is the buyer needs to imply or state via ebay messaging that they plan to leave negative feedback if the seller doesn't comply with what they want (something not promised in the listing). it has to be something that ebay CS can read and verify. if this is the case, the feedback is always removed by ebay. a lot of times i will play dumb with the buyer and tell them 'i don't understand what you want' if they are not spelling it out clearly enough for ebay CS to see. full policy is under 'feedback extortion' under ebay's 'help and contact' at the top of the scren
